Texas held Nebraska to .400 for the night. Can't remember if Texas had 1 or 3 blocks. Holding NU to above season average is ....

Faucette was very impressive and when Hooker and Engle are back that could be very scary for everyone!! Holloway was killing Texas with the setter dumps. Stalls and Cooper combined for 16 kills and 1 error while Texas' middles had just 5 kills and 2 errors. Can't wait to see what happens down in Austin!!

Huge crowds of senior citizens. No students to be seen... anywhere. Anyone see the defibrillators and oxygen tanks? On the way out I spotted, actually my friends spotted one built into the wall. So there is at least one defibrillator there. Fans, rejoice! I've been going to these games sporadically since 1994. It is kind of freaky seeing the same fans, in the same seats year after year (those with season tickets)... and watching the entire building get older. I'm sure many students would die to get into the game... but they can't, unless they are an athlete-student... or is that student-athlete? One section on the floor for student athletes.

What a dissapointment.
Engle out w/an ankle, Hooker suspended for an academic issue. What promised to be a dogfight was nothing but a ho-hummer.
Faucette was a warrior. That kid is going to be unreal by the time she's an upperclassman.
Nebraska semed to play down to the competition in game one. Picked up after that but still not a sterling performance. Be interesting to read Cooks comments. I don't think he's a happy camper w/a lot of aspects of this match.

On the other hand, for Texas, Juliann Faucette is the STUD. Any VB fan has got to love her play. She was about the only one on the Texas team getting vocal. We almost saw a momentum swing there when she was serving in game three, right when Cook called the time out. She came to the huddle completely screaming... it was to the point of hilarity, but still pretty cool.

So is this the defibrillator/old person thread or the thread about NU vs Tx. Well, since my observation was while at the Texas game, I pointed it out here... sorry for the ramble that had nothing to do with the game. I'll mention the game from my seat from behind the scorers table. Not literally, but two rows up. Wish Hooker would have played. I think our team was ramped up to try and defend her attacks above the block. When she didn't rotate in, that's when I realized something was up... I figured injury, but she was in warmups. Faucett can get up there too. Vocal already, she will be awesome to watch mature with this team. I think Schwartz played better at libero than I've seen in awhile... she seemed in better position set up in the power alley. she picked up a few good digs, granted they didn't shank off the block. Also ran out to try and get a few shanked passes off the court, showed great hustle. I think the worries about her is that she doesn't react off the block touch as well as Cook would like... a lot of that position is not just knowing on paper where to be, but reading the play on the other side... the position of the hitter, the type of set... where the block is setting up, etc... Stalls was amazing Cooper seemed to jump out of the gym... there were a few sets a little high from Maggie that she was still able to get a swipe at. So the fans are quiet during the play... big deal. I like hearing the communication between the players on serve receive and listening to the coaches bark out instructions to their players. Why be loud the whole time? I don't think being loud the whole time actually helps the home team much.

I wonder what percentage of viewers who weren't already big volleyball fans changed the channel after seeing 7 of the first 14 points of the match go down as service errors. Boring.
Pretty much what I predicited -- if Texas played close at the beginning, Nebraska would rachet up a couple notches and take the match in 3 sets.
Great to finally see Faucette live up to her #2 ranking. If the blockers aren't tightly sealed she is deadly. She'll be at least a 3-year AA. Texas played much better than I expected when I heard Destinee wouldn't take the court.
After seeing this match, I'm leaning towards giving Texas a slight edge when the Huskers go down to Austin. Remember last year they had to work out starting freshman and an uncertain lineup and they looked really rough during the middle of the season, but by December they turned on the heat and gave Stanford a better fight in the Regional Final fight than Washington put up in the National Semi.

1 dig by Faucette? That was it? she played all around right? Well I do recall the lack of floor defense on Texas' side until late game two when they started to get some digs.

1 dig by Faucette? That was it? she played all around right? Well I do recall the lack of floor defense on Texas' side until late game two when they started to get some digs. I noticed that also, but I think it's because on defense she patrols middle short or left back. It seemed to me that Nebraska did not attack the left side of the Texas court very often. Their shots went after Moriarty on the right or went deep to the libero/DS zone. Which makes sense when you think about how most of their kill poinst are: Larson down the line. Houghtelling tooling sideways or hitting fingertips to send it out. Pavan swinging hard crosscourt from back right. The only Husker who consistently works the opponent's left line is Stalls on the slide. I'm inclined to believe this was part of Cook's gameplan. Being reasonably certain that Engle would be out makes Texas very vulnerable on the right both in terms of blocking and in terms of defense. I'd bet a few dollars that if a healthy Engle had suddenly subbed into Game 2, Cook would have adjusted his hitters to take the hard angle more often, not to mention the transition blocking schemes having to respect her BR attack. I don't in any way mean this as a criticism, but quite honestly Pavan looks bored to me. If only some of what we seem to know about her personality is true, I have to wonder if part of her mind is already thinking ahead to bigger challenges. She doesn't seem like the kind of person to be satisfied staying at the same level for very long, which I think is an admirable trait in an athlete.

By the way, congratulations to Paolini, she is starting to look good. An offense without Engle and Hooker makes it too easy for her to get screwed on trap sets and bad transitions, but she had some really great moments. It's not often we get to see a 6'5" middle attack successfully from the back row -- it was so surprising I had to watch the replay carefully just to make sure I had seen the play correctly. I was not impressed with her freshman season, but at the end of last year you could see glimpses of... something. Now it's paying off. Good to see the Texas coaches have helped her improve so much since last year.
