USC takes it. Good showing by OSU though. Lots of parity this year.

16 - 14 USC to take the match 3 - 2. Tough loss for the Buckeyes. I'm not sure I'd say that, Gorf. OSU had three coulda-wouldas in Game 5.. they beat themselves down the stretch. But hats off to the Buckeyes! They came to play and were on fire... except for a spotty G2. The block was evident tonight---even with USC's incredibly high sets (to those friggin' monsters!), and Ashley Hughes had ZERO calls on her hands. I hope she's The Setter for the year. The refs absolutely sucked... USC gets away with way too much lifting. GEEZ! This was a great warmup for the Big Ten. Granted, I expected USC to be better than what I saw (I'm not saying they're overrated... I just had very high expectations of their program), but OSU was not at all intimidated by the height and the loftiness of the Trojans. OSU had 15.5 blocks... 5 of which were in Game 5. USC had better numbers and better athletes, but this is why they play the games, eh? I think OSU is better than Oregon, and I'll be surprised if the Buckeyes don't beat 'em tomorrow. Both the Ducks and the Boilers have major issues touching that ball! All in all, a very enjoyable night of VB. Again, when your team is "SO CLOSE," it's easy to go back and second guess, but USC's coaches were absolutely RELIEVED to get out of there with a win tonight.

I called it a tough loss becaus the battled so hard throughout the match - making some tough comebacks in games.
Only let it slip away after making yet another big comeback in game 5 to take a 14 - 12 lead.

I just got back from Columbus. I left after game 2 of the OSU/USC match, so didn't see the exciting end.
Was happy with Purdue's win. They were able to put most of their bad stuff in game 2, where nothing went right (I think there were 7 BHEs called - I'm not one to complain about tight ball handling, BUT she was all over the place in her calls; very loose in game 1, then she got very tight all of a sudden). Meyer's serve (I think that is the one - the lefty jump serve) caught Purdue in a bad rotation in game 2 and ate them to pieces. Purdue changed the rotation a couple of spots in game 3, it appears, and that addressed it well.
Gutsy call by Shondell in game 4. Purdue was ahead 12 - 10 before Oregon ran off 6 straight and a 9-4 run. However, Purdue doesn't call timeout. We get back to the good rotation, with Miller serving and Lynch and Mader in the front, down 21 - 24 and Purdue ties it at 24 and gets ahead 26 - 25. At this point, Oregon seemed to let it go. I think they got a little edgy being they haven't faced the losing point yet this season, and Purdue pulled up 29 - 26. The Ducks got a couple of points, but Sami Mader ended it.
Mader had a pretty good night (although I should check the stats). Regardless, she had a lot of success beating Oregon's big middle (#12). I was sitting with Mick Haley in games 3 and 4, and he pointed out how her arms were too far apart and Mader kept going between them ("field goal!"). In crunch time, that was the key, and Sami scored the last two points in each of games 1 and 3 that way.
