Let's see. Purdue had 3 BHE and 6 BE. Indiana had 0 of each.
Purdue did outdig the Hoosiers, although the gap was closed to 86-72. Kills and errors (33 each) were pretty even, as were blocks.
Looks to me like Hall was the difference.

Is it time to start talking about IU's NCAA chances? The non-conference schedule wasn't very strong, but they do have a solid win at Illinois and this one at home. Quite a nice turnaround from last season for them. Dunbar is doing a great job there so far. As mentioned earlier, props to IU for winning when Short had the most swings and had twice as many errors as kills.
I am wondering about Purdue. It looked like they were playing better, but this was an important match for them to win and they didn't. Lynch didn't get going like she can, so IU must have been doing something to slow her down effectively. I am not sure about the other hitters. Merlau and Mader don't seem to be much better than they were two years ago. Of course, having Dargan then probably helped.

Purdue seems like a team that when functioning properly mentally, can be as good as anyone, but if they lose that mental edge, they can fall to a team playing hard with a lot of heart. Being up 28-20 in the first game and losing will do that to your mental game. I am extremely interested in seeing what Purdue does this weekend against Michigan. I still feel they are back to playing really good volleyball. Good teams are allowed breakdowns every so often. It's the rebound performance that defines them.

I think you mean "what IU" does against Michigan?
IU travels to Ann Arbor this Friday for what we fans hope will be a repeat performance of last year....a BIG WIN over the Wolverines. The kids took an unsuspecting MI team by surprise...the blocking was superb by IU in the hostile Wolverine environment.
Finally, this year is revealing why I have been hopeful about IU...when some just look at the W or L, I have been watching the scores of individual matches....and trying to figure out the sum of the parts...what were the little things (when added together) ending in the losses? Micro instead of Macro.
IU had several players with lingering injuries, they had a loss of confidence in their coach, and the growing loss of self confidence that comes with the losses. Add a few more of these "small" parts . It took one BIG change (the coach) to foster the mental shift among the players. Result...wins. Watch for more positive results from IU. These kids deserve the wins...they have been working, working, working to overcome the ghost of years past.
And yes, the freshmen have been a force...but it takes a coach who can drive up an incoming player's (high school) skill level to compete in the Big Ten while doing the same for the Sophs, Jrs, and Seniors.

That first game was a tough one for Purdue, and I knew they were in trouble when they lost it. They were relying really heavily on their OHs, but Mader was lighting it up (she had 9 kills in game 1 alone). But even with Lynch ineffective, they were dominating, and that was a good sign. For Purdue to be competitive, they have to win those games, which they were well on their way to doing. When you are playing well and the other team struggles, you have to put them away. An amazing run by IU (overall the scoring run was 13 - 1!). I thought there weren't supposed to be any big comebacks in rally scoring...grrrrr
However, when Purdue went out and blew to the big lead again in Game 2, it seemed the ship was right. However, as noted, IU really handled the ends of games 3 and 4. Mader started getting bottled up, and Purdue's defense wasn't the same. My impression is that the IU setter did a nice job - Purdue didn't block well, but when they did they got a lot of solo blocks, meaning there were a lot of one-on-one matchups.
IU has shown that they aren't the same as in the past, but of course Purdue is dissapointed in the loss. That game 1 loss really, really hurts. They've got to get better at putting teams away. Even when they roll through the first two games, I am never comfortable with game 3. I don't know what's happening, but there always seems to be some sort of let-up.
This weekend at Michigan will be some pretty interesting matches all around.

I was honestly surprised Purdue came back and won a game. I would have expected a loss like game one to knock your mind completely out of the game. I read over my last post and realized I didn' give enough credit to IU. They played a great game. They had to. Dunbar has done wonders with that team, I just hope it continues and isn't another red herron in B10 bottom dwellers sneaking up. Indiana never quit. Appearantly taking the football team's motto after the loss of fmr. head coach Terry Hoeppner. Down 28-20, there are very few teams that would have thought they were still in the game. Future COY, Sherry Dunbar kept their heads in it and pulled them through. I say that lightly knowing how off the COY selection usually is, usually automatically given to a top 2 finisher. I look forward to both matches, but I see the Purdue match as one with more significance,

all in b'town need to enjoy this win - especially the way it happened. yes, 28-20 is a less than 1% chance of comeback, so this was just the hoosiers night. but don't dismiss HOW it happened. from gametracker it looks like benson took over the match. now let's see the train continue rolling through ann arbor.
as for the coy for dunbar and the psychology of this IU team, is it one person or the entire program, or is it because the program changed based on the leader and her style? how much do the assistants play in this? are the players simply putting it together now? if you look solely at the roster, looks to me they finally have a bit of depth and ability at MH, finally a O2 that fits the typical OH role.

I know, I should be careful what I ask for... I always complain about having IU as a travel partner, so I have to think it is a good thing they are getting better. It just seemed like IU had a fire in the belly type of attitude, and Purdue expected to win. I like being at the point where the team expects to win better than all those seasons where I was happy as long as we beat IU.
Purdue needs to regroup and beat Michigan.

At least one coach at IU is doing well. Kelvin Sampson, on the other hand, must be an idiot. Cripes. How does he do the same thing for which he got busted before? Didn't he think the NCAA and IU would be watching him? I am an IU hoops fan, but I have to say that I haven't gotten a good impression of the Sampson era thus far. He got Gordon, but now every Big Ten coach will feel free to poach his recruits. Not a good thing long term.

I would have no problem with having Dunbar as COY. She's taken what was usually a "soft" team and turned them into a highly competitive team in her first year. IU in the past would have never pulled out a win in a match like they had in Huff. If they don't make the NCAA's this year they will soon.

Wow. I gotta say, I'm really excited, but totally surprised by the result. Awesome job, Hoosiers!
_Thankfully_ I have DirectTV and I got to see the match on the tube.
Mader was totally dominating from the start. I was like, "Uh oh, here we go again, someone has the match of their career against us yet again..." (on second thought, Kelli Miller broke Purdue's school record for digs last night with 40, so I guess it happened anyway - good job Kelli.) When IU was down 28-20, I was just hoping we could make a surge to push us to focus on the second game, but Kelsey Hall (the jump serving made me nervous) really got us back into it. Hilgenberg kept feeding Benson on the slide, then Benson had a HUGE solo block to get to game point, and Purdue was kept out of system to win the game for IU. It was quite an impressive comeback. The freshman MBs, Wittmer and Benson, really did a great job.
I thought Hart did a good job distributing for Purdue, but her block kept getting used. Gurnell stuffed alot of balls but also got blocked in return, and then sort of faded away as the match progressed. Merlau and Lynch were seriously bouncing balls during the second game. Luckily, as in years past, no Hoosier got hit in the face.
Short gives the impression she could be dominant, but doesn't mange the out of system balls well at all. The second game was u.g.l.y., and then the Kelsey Hall show started in the 3rd game. She had nine kills, and came up with some pretty impressive digs off Purdue _bombs_, and all the while, Hilgenberg looked to stay very composed, which I have to say was very nice to see. I like her fire.
Finally, much needs to be said for Ditteon and Pierce. Ditteon did it all - very consistent and level headed. Pierce ran the back court, passed very well, and looked confident. I suppose that's what I never really found evident in many past Hoosier teams - confidence. Credit Coach Dunbar for that, and her assistants as well.

Loved the fact that the match was on the BTN and in High Def.

Oh yeah, one more thing: Where did all these IU fans materialize? My one man bandwagon has been empty for awhile. Through 5-15, 2-18, and 1-19, I was all by myself. Sniff.
Go Hoosiers!

Funny, we just talked about how Purdue should be recieving points in the AVCA poll. Do people still think so now? And I say this with no disrespect to IU. I didn't realize Hall was playing there! They got a good player in her.
