There had been debates earlier on if Maes would be a good head coach or not and I can vouch that he will be. It was mentioned that being an assistant is different than being a head. Well at Cal, Maes was the head coach there (even though his title said otherwise) and ask any former players of the Feller/Maes combo and they will say the same. Maes ran the practices, scouting reports, had a whole game plan for the year from day one. (I would like to mention here that Chris Bigelow is in charge of recruiting and does an amazing job and she is also a great coach and asset to the coaching squad at Cal, she I completely respect and is in no way in this debate, Maes I respect as well and Feller is a big HECK NO) Feller would routinely try to take over practice and ruin the run of things. He would not even know the correct line-up to put in a game (messed it up more than once) and never gave credit to where it was deserved and this was to his two great assistants (Maes and Bigs). He is not a man of his word, and thus I do not respect him and believe that his coaching abilities are less than adequate to even be considered an assistant coach. His selfishness is what has gotten him where he is today. Maes will do amazing at Virginia and will take the ACC to a whole new level. And the award for best Rich Feller attack disguised as well-wishing for Lee Maes goes to...

"Official" is and will be defined by p-dub and p-dub alone. Rich Kern trumps p-dub. RK says Maes to Virgnia is official.

Actually, the Unversity of Virginia said it. It's on their website.

Does anyone else find it disconcerting that they but a picture of Paula Deen underneath that of Lee? I thought she was going there as the head volleyball nutritionist or something. Lets pump butter into the veins of these skinny volleyball girls!

Actually, the Unversity of Virginia said it. It's on their website. Thanks p-dub. But I get most of my volleyball news from here (often from you, keystone & RK). It's been entertaining, but nice to see all these positions getting wrapped up here on Super Monday... after Super Sunday. Now, I can focus on Super Tuesday...

I'm not privy to all the details about the coaching situation, but Coach Feller and the athletic dept have always given Lee credit for his very important contributions. He always let people know that Chris Bigelow was (in his opinion) the best recruiter in the country and that Lee Maes was an important reason for Cal's success to this point. The athletic dept had never been shy about his importance to the program either. calbears.cstv.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/031004aaa.htmlcalbears.cstv.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/011805aaa.html

Anyone else notice how similarly the two statements (when Lee left Cal for Nebraska and leaving Nebraska for Virginia) are worded? I think Lee needs to get a new speech writer!

I don't have a great knowledge of the ins and outs of the coaches and their styles. I am learning as my daughter progresses through club volleyball. So while we are on the topic of hiring Coach Maes, I have some questions about his coaching style.
What position will get most of the swings? Quick or high-ball offense? How much is the right side involved? Etc..
How is his coaching style in regards to being nurturing vs. being blount?
Do you think he will favor players that may be undersized, but with great volleyball talent or will he lean toward the big girls who may be a project?

Do you think he favor players that may be undersized, but with great volleyball talent or will he lean toward the big girls who may be a project? He has no position that he (and his fellow coaches) prefer per se. He's a good coach and will run with any number of different styles depending on his personnel. Back when he was at Cal, he and Coach Feller used all sorts of different lineups. With Mia Jerkov it was pretty obvious to set her as often as possible. When Mia was gone, they still went heavily to the outsides but got the middles more involved. One year the team went with a 6-2. I can't say how much of it was Coach Feller vs Lee, but I think it's safe to say that a lot of the technical training was run by Lee. He can be blunt. He can be nurturing. Depends on the situation. He can work with undersized. He was very important in Angie Pressey's development, and Camille Leffall made 2nd team All-American while Lee was her coach.

Personally, I'm waiting to see the photos of hooshoo eating her keyboard.
I guess UVA's "agenda" changed?
