Fundraising works at some schools. Donations from alums can help, if someone has kept up the alumni list, and chats with the alums several times a year on an informational newsletter.
However, dues at Cal have ranged from $2000 per player some 20 years ago (they did a ton of traveling, east coast, midwest, etc) to $800 most recently, then $300, this year $500.
Finding business donors is a huge challenge. Sometimes we have had 3-4 ...most other times not. Some schools do one or more sand/grass tourneys to raise $$. We started this year doing a grass tourney...one in May and one in Sept.
We have always had a coach, some guys liked them, some did not; Often team decides to change every year or every other year or the coach cannot work out his schedule to come. They work for peanuts, ($3K - $5K) and have another job.
Finding possible coaches in norcal at least is VERY difficult as they have to be able to be on campus for practice at 5pm....which means coming from SF or San Jose is impossible. Only because we had a school teacher some of the time, were they able to get here. We often scramble to find ONE possibility.
Things are looking up financially at Cal currently, with some good donor/alum interest, but things can always change in a hurry...and they usually do...
Alums rarely give much till they have been out 10 years, and come to Alumni Matches, so a data base has to be established and one of the team players/somebody has to keep up with emailing news and most importantly, keeping up with emails. Most of the guys know where their teammates are, but you have to work on keeping a current database....on campus.
We do struggle too occasionally, with having more than the allowed two former NCAA players, who want to play ...per team...but I am sure socal clubs have a real problem in that area. We get transfers in to Cal as juniors at times, but only a few compared to those who go to socal colleges with so many community college programs with mvball teams. There are none up here.
These days, any club team's finances are a real challenge.

Im just saying that i bet it is easier to get fundrasing money when you are the sole volleyball team as opposed to the LA schools where no one wants to support you because they would rather support the NCAA team. Also you dont think that a coach helps? then why do all professional and national teams have coaches? we have a NCAA team as well, all i'm saying if you are that determined to make it to nationals (or raise funds for that matter), there is probably some way. as for a "coach", i personally think having a person to run practices/ your team is very important, obviously having a leader running things will help. but that role can fall on a president/captain as much as any coach running a team, as it does with many teams in the nation. having a coach can help, but not having a coach is not a serious disadvantange. This is, of course, assuming that your team is "good" by the standards we were talking about before. obviously a team full of misfits would seriously benefit from a coach

Someone mentioned anyone who played Junior College vball was ineligible for club.
Is this true? In all club sports or just Vball? Why?
Thanks

Those rules indicate that any one team can only have two players who have played prior NCAA ball or NAIA ball and ...jr college is considered NCAA ball...so therefore any player you have counts as part of two allowed. If you have a second team, then you can have two more.
NCCVL follows the same rules for our league play. Our rosters are frozen before league starts in latter January.
Las Vegas, Far Westerns...are non league...so anyone can play that you want. However, putting other players on teams at those tourneys would be sorta counter productive as you want your players to get as much floor time as possible.

"Midwest teams may have taken the last few nationals, but keep in mind it was basically Cal/Arizona there for awhile and Fresno State technically took '04 with the MATC fiasco."
It was Cal/AZ for a while, but that was haw many years ago?!? Zubaz were still cool then. Really, still concerned about that MATC one? Who has won Nationals since then? I'll help, three teams, Marquette, UW-0, and Lakeland. Not just midwest teams, but WVC teams (none of those has a rich alumni funding the team either). The team from the best conference has the best shot at winning. Better competition leads to better results. WVC teams have fared fairly well in the last few Nationals if I remember correctly. Spilled milk from five years ago still stinks like last week's leftovers.
Also, here's a hint as to why midwest teams don't travel out of the region...what's the point?!? If you can find the best competition without having to hop a flight, why waste the money? Last few years, the #1, #2, and #3 teams were (and I'm just averaging) UW-0, Illinois, and Lakeland (for the most part because rankings have been few and far between). I've seen it the last four/five years, the west coast teams are full of helium....they pump their sh!t to the ceiling before the bash, but when it comes time to party they're out of gas.
No offense, but results don't lie. If you're in the club game, it's all for the love of it. The name of the game however is show and prove not talk and limp d!ck it. If you'll notice, the good teams don't flap their fingers on the keyboard proclaiming their excellence; they prove it in a 30'X60' rectangle. Ouch...I'm a little mean tonight. Sorry.
As far as coaching, oh my god does a coach help. What I've seen (from teams without a coach) it's usually one of the better players on a team running the club. I can't imagine how good club ball would be with each team getting some kind of outside coaching. It would allow the team to practice together without one of their main players stepping out to take the "coach" role. I was lucky where "coaching" my team didn't really affect us too much. We weren't going to win Nationals or anything, but we were still fairly competitive. If I were paid to be a coach this year, I'd have these kids causing havoc across the board. An outside perspective is exactly what a lot of these teams need. It would keep the cocky a$$es in line (and I'd definitely include myself in that group as a player) and straighten the headcases out instead of the team just dealing with the deficiency.

It was Cal/AZ for a while, but that was haw many years ago?!? 5, as I said in my post. Who has won Nationals since then? Midwest teams, as I said in my post. Thanks for specifying which ones. I was merely pointing out that in the club volleyball world, where players, coaches and funding can be inconsistent from year to year, it is difficult to remain a top team over the course of more than a couple years. You can have a team like UW-O who is sick for 2 years then finish 21st at nationals. You mention Illinois as one of the best teams and in the same breath talk about west coast teams being "out of gas before the bash." Uh, when did Illinois win nationals again? I'm not trying to talk up the west, just saying...how many years of respect does winning nationals get you? More than 2 and less than 5? 'Til you finish 21st after being a 2-time champion? Or do you just have to be part of the "best" conference like UW-Stevens Point? If the WVC was the best conference last year then why was their best finisher (after Lakeland) Marquette at #19 and why were there 9 California teams who finished better?

No one stated that the West Coast schools are not competitive- but I am pretty sure that the west coast schools would trade some of their off years for an Illinois "off year." (Illinois hasn't finished outside the top 10 in a long time, if ever.) As for the WVC, it is tough to argue with the formula- 4 years, 4 National titles. Similar to how Big 12 football has Baylor, Pac-10 Volleyball has Washington State, and Big East Basketball has South Florida, every conference is going to have its bad teams. The upper echelon of the WVC has shown it is as good and better than teams out West over the past 4 years. So you ask the question, how many years of respect does winning Nationals get you? My guess would be 4 in a row for starters.

Oshkosh will be hosting a tourney Nov 22. (Sorry for the late notice but we just got the approval for the facilities.)
Cost is $150 and $100 for a second team.
We have very cheap hotel/housing available at the conference center on campus with is located within a block of food and the campus bars. There are also other hotels located around Oshkosh.
If interested please contact Mike at callam54@uwosh.edu

The upper echelon of the WVC has shown it is as good and better than teams out West over the past 4 years. I dont disagree with anything you're saying. Let's see if I can better illustrate my point. The last time the Lakers won an NBA title was 2002. They have been competitive since, but they haven't won a title in 6 years. Yet you don't hear anyone saying "Oh the Lakers will get some respect once they win something." My point is that it has only been 4-5 years (average undergrad term, and LESS than nirsa's 6 year eligibility) since the west coast teams were dominant. Yes, the midwest has had the best teams at nationals for the last 4 years, but the west had it before that, so it's not like they've "never won anything." It wasn't my intention to rekindle the west/midwest debate, I just wanted to respond do bounce04's comment, "Heaven forbid that someone from the west coast win nationals." because it has happened. And it wasn't THAT long ago. I guess it just depends on how you choose to look at it.

Any info on the Illini 16? I heard Illinois 2's team beat COD in the finals! so that means Illinois's 1's lost to COD in the semis? How'd other teams do- Ohio St. Mizzou?
Lakeland won the NIU tourney beating Iowa St in the semis and NIU Alumni in the finals. Put up a block party on them and just shut them out. Iowa St. is a lot better than they have been in the past. It's like a whole new team...

The Navy Fall Invitational (16 teams to include: Maryland, Navy, Boston, Delaware, UMass, Yale, some others...) was held this past Saturday with some teams from around the East Coast. Nothing too great but Navy beat Maryland in the finals 2-0 (25-17, 25-20). I imagine the best teams from EIVA will be Buffalo, Maryland, Navy, Penn State, Va Tech, and JMU...the usual...
