Speaking of BYU, is Tom Peterson interested in going back to the men's game?

Wouldn't mind seeing some other peeps with Hawaii ties come back to coach the UH men. Short list:
- Charlie Wade - Reed Sunahara - Sivan Leoni (guess he got outa the coaching business after Kalaheo, but even with a lack of D1 coaching experience, I think he's plenty smart enough to pick it up, and his enthusiasm would be exactly what the program needs)

Charlie Wade, Interesting has he even coached men before? I think he should stay at Pacific, they need him.
Reed Sunahara- No thanks!
Sivan- Would love to have him be an assistant or Naveh Milo. Eyal Zimet would make a great assistant as well or even Brian Beckwith who could help recruit some Pali boys.
I heard that Mark Presho will aply.
I know Speraw is a LONGSHOT but he would turn the program around instantly.
What is Carl McGowan up to these days? He or Tom Peterson would be good hires, but I would prefer someone younger.
I wonder if Jon Stevenson is interested in coaching on the men's side again.

I don't think coaching men vs. coaching women is all that different, and Wade is astute enough and a student of the game to make the transition. What's wrong with Sunahara? Don't know much about him as a coach. Presho would be the worst choice ever, they'd be better off asking Sealy to come over from the women's side. The ideal choice would be someone who has experience in managing a D1 program, or at least any kind of major enterprise such as a business, is able to sell the program and recruit in and around the traditional recruiting bases (SoCal, Midwest, Hawaii) which is something Wilton was never good at, and understands the culture of Hawaii and the history of the UH men's program. Also, I think after 17 years of Wilton's marine-style leadership, the program needs a player's coach - someone like a Speraw or a Kosty or a Campbell. Wouldn't hurt UH to pump up the Euro-Israeli-Puerto Rico efforts either.

I heard that Mark Presho will aply. I know Speraw is a LONGSHOT but he would turn the program around instantly. the only place speraw is going anytime soon is ucla, if scates leaves & his new uci contract allows such a move. presho has done good work for, and been mentored by, dunphy at pepperdine and speraw at uci. especially as an alum and a player's coach, he'd be a good fit. i'd think scotty wong would be getting a look. sealy's a good call, too

I really don't see guys like Sunahara or Sealy leaving women's program for men's program because of the instability of men's volleyball. The sports of men's volleyball could die at any moment. The guys who will take the chance to coach the men's game will be the "up and comers" or the "out of work" coaches. Imagine Reed resigning from Cincinnati and moving to UH to coach the men and then we drop men's VB. It would be a smart decision to stay in the women's game.

Does anyone know if Wilton recruited Gus hard or if he already had his sights set on playing for Hawaii?

I want to throw in Pii Aiu as a possibility. Although, part of being a head coach is not just running the team. Recruiting will be a major factor and I don't know if Aiu or any of the coaches mentioned (Wade, Presho, Sunahara, etc.) have connections to the prep male players. I also think a lot of this job will be public relations and getting the crowd back to the SSC.

Peterson from BYU you gotta be kickin. A BYU man at Manoa you gotta be kickin me. Remember he left Provo under "A cloud of NCAA investigation". Wilton is a Mormon, but not a BYU guy (yet). That guy whined on the court more than his semi-pro Brazilian players in the early 2003-04 seasons. No way Hawaii should even consider Peterson.
Here are my top three choices. Mark Presho, Allen Allen and Tino Reyes. This could change depending who else is interested in the position.
MARK PRESHO: I didn't think he would leave his regular day job (he makes good $$$ with the company). Now I hear he is interested in the position. He has alot to offer: 1. Coaching mentors: Marv at Pepp and Speraw at UCI. 2. So. Cal Guy - Huntington Beach Oiler (a plus in recruiting the So. Cal boys). I'm pretty sure he already established a recruiting base in So. Cal. 3. Hawaii Great Player/Alum - Need to hire a Hawaii guy. 4. He is a good salesman. He could sell the program to recruits, fans and sponsors.
ALLEN ALLEN: The Bows "Greatest Local Player" (along with Clay Stanley). I give the edge to Allen because he played four years, he has more standing records and he graduated - Hawaii Alum. 1. Allen been waiting for this job for several years. 2. He would make an outstanding coach. Has been living in San Diego and is active with his club coaching and camps. 3. He has a Masters Degree which I think might be one of the requirements for the positiion. 4. He definitely would have the support of local community, could be very influential in recruiting the local players - if they remember him. 5. Only draw back - no recent history in coaching in the collegiate ranks.
TINO REYES: Don't write off Tino. Hawaii has a history of hiring assistant coaches: Coach Mc in Football and Nash in Basketball. If consistency in the program is something the AD wants then Tino is your Man. 1. Tino has to convince the administration that he is his "own man", and that he is not a reflection of Coach Wilton. 2. Although he is not a Hawaii Alum, he is one of Hawaii's sons. 3. Tino has been the recruiter for the program, and has a base with the Youth and Junior National Program. If appears that he as locked up a couple of key recruits - (German Junior National Team player) and maybe a Middle Blocker from Serbia. I'd hate to see the program lose these players. He needs to bring in a good setter from So. Cal. 4. Again, the key for Tino to convince the adminstration we will won't be seeing the same losing results for the past two years.
If I were the AD, I would consult with Dave Shoji before I make my final decision.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS.
SCOTTY WONG: I know he has been looking for a head coaching position. Asst coach at Pepp and Hawaii. Has several years of assist coaching under his belt. 1. Local boy comes home. 2. Should have no problems recruiting Hawaii and Cali players. 3. Mentored by some of the of the best coaches in the game. Marv and Dave. 4. Kinda of a 'quiet guy". doesn't have a strong personality like Presho. Could be a favorite with the fans. 5. Again its important that the Bow hired a Hawaii guy.
MIKE AMONG - IOLANI HIGH SCHOOL. If I had to pick someone from the Hawaii High School ranks it would be Mike Among. Outstanding coach with a pipeline to the Iolani/Punahou talent pool. No collegiate coaching experience.
MIKE SEALY - He has all the qualities to become a good mens coach. I really think he'd make a better mens coach than a womens coach. Great player and was mentored by BIG AL at UCLA. Only draw back - he is a BRUIN. I was surprised that Dave Shoji hired him, but I think he must have some outstanding qualities that over shadowed the fact that he is a BRUIN.
FIRST PICK FOR GRADUATE ASSISTANT. Sean Carney. That Kid busted his ass for the program. A true Rainbow Warrior and son of an educator. Possible head coach ten years from now.

I wasn't that impressed with his coaching or his team when they played here last fall. Also too many of his players transfer out every year.
Sealy's current salary would be doubled if he became the men's volleyball head coach, that's something that he might consider. Personally I would prefer he stay with the wahine, they need him.
This is a very weak top 3 in my opinion.
I think Presho will be a finalist though.
One of the minimum requirements is at least 5 years of college coaching experience so Allen Allen might be out.
Reyes is just as much to blame as Wilton for the last three crappy seasons. The committee needs to look in another direction. I would be surprised if he ends up as a finalist for the job.

How about Dave Shoji? He could use the position as a transistion to retirement. Like Don Shaw.

How about Dave Shoji? He could use the position as a transistion to retirement. Like Don Shaw. That would be cool. I think Shoji even coached the UH Men's at one time.
