I can't believe I'm going to comment on this guy's post, but since I can be fairly factual about it, I'll just fire this off...
Eduardo DePaulo, a Brazilian client of ours at BIP, is the player that Ehud Liebman signed to play in Israel for Maccabi Arazim Ranaana and therefore must be the player that "ruined" tuctoac's "whole season". The story behind Eduardo is as follows:
Eduardo ("Edu") was injured in the 2005-2006 season while playing for VC Omniworld, in Holland. He ruptured his achilles tendon in his right foot and couldn't finish the season in the Dutch Top Division. He spent December '05 to December '06 rehabbing his injury and was cleared 100% to play again on January 1, 2007. He then Joined BNI Bank Jakarta of the Indonesian league and was nominated as a league all-star. After the Indonesian short season, he signed for the 2007-2008 European season in Israel with Maccabi Arazim Ranaana based on a conditional medical exam by the team which he passed at the beginning of the season. On January 30, 2008 it was agreed in cooperation with the club to break the contract and Edu finished the season with Lasse Riga winning the championship in Latvia. In 2008-2009 Edu joined his old team in Holland (VC Omniworld) and played without any physical problems until the team went bankrupt and Edu decided to finish the year in his home country of Brazil.

...and as gobears mentions, yes, you certainly can go from club volleyball to "pro" volleyball. We place a handful of players every year that played JC or Club ball, and in some cases, older players (~24 to ~28 let's say) that have just been playing USVBA Nationals for the last several years. There are so many levels of teams, that there really are spots for everyone. But in many cases it has to be more about the "Experience" and less about the "Volleyball". Remember that "professional" is a relative term here... Non-National Team superstars will not be on teams that have anything in common with the NBA. Anyone interersted in this year's August Exposure Tour (already full for setters and liberos) can see more info about the opportunities we offer at: bringitusa.com/events/firesale_men_2009/index.phpAnd there is some basic info on teams, leagues, European Cups, etc. on our Player FAQ Page here: bringitusa.com/faq/players.phpThe list of teams and leagues that have "payment problems" varies from year to year, and this is an especially hard time to talk about these issues because of the current economic crisis. Teams and leagues that formerly never had financial trouble are starting to see some problematic situations, so more than ever its important to be really sure about any club before signing with them. And players need to be ready to make hard decisions if clubs have money or sponsor problems during these next few seasons until the world's various economies get back on track. I'm happy to answer any specific questions if anyone wants to post them or email me, Tim

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on the clubs in Switzerland? I am getting recruited by one of their top teams, but am still hesitant to even go overseas and play. Part of me just wants to play men's club and find a real job here in the US.

How old are you? Find out how much you can potentially make playing overseas, if it's adequate why not take the chance and try it out, who knows, maybe professional volleyball can end up being your "real job". If not, you can always come back and get that 9-5.

Dug this topic out....because of the Greece situation. Any word on their ability to pay this year? It's still historically known to not pay on time or at all. I myself am most likely not playing this year because my options as of now are Cyprus and Greece. Also, their situation has obviously brought the value of the euro down. It still fluctuates a tad but the American dollar is closer to the euro than it has been for quite some time.

Turkey, Greece and Cyprus all have issues paying their soccer players, I can imagine it would be the same for volleyball.

I played oversea for quite a bit of money back in the day. Here is a way to make sure you get paid: Set up a time table for getting paid....every 30 days would seem reasonable. When they pay you, go to practice and matches. When they do not meet their deadlines, do not go to practice. Simple. They might say you are breaking their contract, but they will not pay you anyways......

Nirsa is the organization that runs the club sports championships. So He is asking if it is possible to go from playing on a club team at at US college to playing professionally overseas. An aside: NIRSA has not been involved in college club nationals since 2008. Starting in 2009, the NCVF (National Collegiate Volleyball Federation) has administered the College Club National Championships (in conjunction with USA Volleyball as tournament organizer.)

In soccer, the Danes require a minimum of 4,000 DK (I think that was about $2,200 back in the day) unless you were a student.
So the Yanks in Italy, Belgium, Germany, etc are making in the $60's?
Anderson is supposed to be making $1m per year right?

Communicate with them in no uncertain terms and then make your moves. What's fair is fair.

Anderson is supposed to be making $1m per year right? I don't think Anderson made 1 million last year since he only played a few matches. I read something from Leon's agent that Resovia couldn't afford the 450,000 Euros (about 490,000 USD) that Kazan was willing to pay him. Not sure if Matt Anderson is making twice as much as Leon even if Leon was out for two years. Maybe he makes money from endorsements and the like. I also read some total team budgets from 2014-2015: Berlin 1.7 million Euros Tours 2.6 million Euros Modena 3 million Euros VfB 2 million Euros That doesn't seem like much at all. Shoji went to Turkey and Touzinsky went to China from Berlin where they could make more money. I also read that in some teams it is the sponsor who may directly pay some player's salaries. I am not too privy to all the inner workings, but that tidbit caught my eye. The highest paid woman in the world last year was Gamova, who made 1.3 million USD with Kim making almost 1.1 million USD.
