"Illini's are a cold and distant lot"? We have reception's after every match to mix with the opposing teams fans and players. We have hosts for opposing tourney teams. We have a large student section to "insult" the other team.

I would rather attend Illinois for grad school, unless it's for marine biology, in which case, I'd pick Hawaii. But then again, the damn giant cockroaches on Oahu are scary. Of course, winters are brutal in the Midwest. People-wise, Illini's are a cold and distant lot, but all those Hawaii locals are so misdemeanor-happy; I mean, you can't park your car anywhere around Honolulu without someone jamming something in your keyhole...Oy vei... It's a toss-up. Wow you've really been traumatized by that incident with your car... this isn't the first time you've brought it up...

Sounds like Illinois is going to be very strong contender who is motivated to take the next step in the tournament. This should be a great match up, assuming that both teams bring their A games. It looks like Kanani and Debruler may be a wash, so it'll be the team with the strongest supporting cast that will win.

Illinois is not the same team since they lost their libero. I'd have to pick Hawaii for this one, but am hoping for good things from my Big 10 team.

I just hope K5 will again broadcast the match live.

I hope so too. I would rather listen to Brooks Baer (sp) than those lame ESPN commentators.
From what I heard, ESPNU has the right to broadcast regional matches. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.

well if Illinois have the best blocker in the country... then Ferrell needs to take smarter shots because USC (among other teams) were blocking her like crazy!

well if Illinois have the best blocker in the country... then Ferrell needs to take smarter shots because USC (among other teams) were blocking her like crazy! Shhhhhh!!! That was supposed to the Illini's "secret" weapon for scoring points. It will be interseting to see the Danielson hitting vs. the Bartsch & Bangert block. Both teams look to be similiar: undersized (5'10-11") OHs, setters who get the job done without a lot of fanfare, and a supporting cast that is consistent. Hawaii has the edge with Mafua's attacking, floor defense, and serve receive passing. Illinois has the edge with their blocking. If Illinois cannot establish their blockers or pass Hawaii's serves, it will be a short match for them. If Hawaii breaks down mentally in any area, it will be a long match that favors Illinois (3-1 vs. 1-1 in 5 set matches).

Tough call, but I like Hawaii in this one. I think the Big Ten teams have shown weakness, and Illinois is no exception. Plus they are sure to miss their libero.
Hawaii has some big wins, and they have something to prove this year. Plus they are closer to home.
As far as which school I would rather attend, it is Hawaii hands-down.

What team anywhere hasn't show a weakness? Our Libero has been picked on by every team we've played since the injury and has held just fine. We've beaten every team in the Big 10, except PSU who nobodies beaten, most of them twice. Illinois doesn't have something to prove? If your on the road what does it matter who's closer? While I'll give that Hawaii has nicer weather what does that have to do with the match?

To whomever said that there's a big drop-off from Illinois' M1 to M2 - I disagree. Bangert is an awesome blocker, but IMO Johnson is a better hitter. (I predict that Johnson as a junior will be more useful than Bangert is as a junior currently.)
DeBruler is a force, and IMO especially out of the back row. Block her at the net, she'll still get some fast, hard hits in from the back row.
I think this will be close, but I might give the edge to Hawai'i here.

If UH shows the same back-row defense that made the difference in stifling the USC comeback attempt, it will be very tough for the Illini to pull this one off. These teams are very similar in the reliance on their star OH. If UH can consistently dig DeBruler, that will back Illinois up against the wall quickly.
The biggest difference between Illinois and USC is the offensive tempo... Illinois pushes the OH *much* quicker than SC, which could hamper UH setting up such a solid defensive scheme like they had Saturday.
I hope this one is more competitive than UH/SC -- I was dissapointed in that match until SC finally decided to start playing volleyball in set 3. Illinois will have to come out strong in the first set if they want a shot at this one.

This is actually my favorite Regional as I am looking forward to both games which I think are gong to be very competitive.
The Hawaii vs. Ill match will be great and to me it will come down to a) Illini passing and ability to get the Right side into the game vs. b) Hawaii's ball control leading to offensive speed to open and mantain the seams. I have Hawaii vs. Ill in my bracket with Hawaii taking it, but at this point my my Minn regional (lowered half) is hammered because of UW, so I am actually going to cheer for Ill.
The Stanford vs. Mich match will also be a doozy...Stanford did not look good in thier last (2) matches and Michigan is on a mission. And, Zimmerman is a monster at setter. I actually have Stanford vs. Hawaii in the Regional final, but I think B10 will be represented.

I can't wait to see how Penn State does next year without Glass and Hodge. ;D[/quote]
Actually 2011 may be even more interesting than 2010. Penn State was playing 5 of their 6 juniors this year ...
