Umm, just how are the rest of the teams in the country performing, HH? Ummm Pube.....I think Florida in all honestly is looking very solid. I don't think Cal should jump several spots to be No 1....no....but I bet you do. Pube? Don't ever confuse me with your bosom buddy Clarence Thomas [you know, the wacko-conservative republican Supreme Court Justice that left pubic hair on Anita Hill's coke can before DNA was capable of producing evidence, but who now votes to refuse to allow its introduction to exculpate previously wrongfully convicted death sentence-facing inmates because he fears how it could be applied to him]. Yes, Florida is looking solid. But losing at home 3-1 to thrice-beaten Penn State, and barely beating Texas at home is an obstacle. Nebraska,in my mind, is also not helped by its loss at home to the afore mentioned Florida team and its bare bones home win over a decimated Illinois team. As a matter of fact, HH, in my role as a RichKern pollster, I did place Cal as my number 2 team and now I will await further results to see how I place them in the next poll.

I did. Same result. Only Beachman. My only question was whether or not Cal might get a few #1 votes. I don't think Cal's nonconference schedule warrants it. I could see it if Cal runs the table.

As a Bay area fan I am excited by Cal's success, but as far as #1; Cal goes to Oregon next week and plays a couple of matches they should win as #1 or #10, then hosts the LA schools. In a Pac 10 that does not clearly reign supreme, yet shows signs of revitilization, beating the LA schools on back to back nights might be enough to lift Cal up, particularly if Stanford shows signs of life and enhances Cals win tonight.
Mystified as to how to analyze the SEC this year. Kentucky is a real disappointment, Tennessee a minor disappointment to date, and LSU still has the book out (5 sets v. Georgia? Uh, OK.) Are Auburn and Mississippi the real thing? Who knows from the West Coast. If I had a vote Florida would remain #1, but unclear when Nebraska or Cal would step up. Maybe if Nebraska beats Texas and ISU again, up with the Big Red.

nice attendance at over 4600. I though California teams didn't draw well. Not this time.

If I were voting in the poll.. I'd vote Stanford #4. Florida remains #1, Nebraska moves to #2, Cal #3, and Hawaii #5.

Both teams are subbing out their frosh OH and soph OPP with DS, leaving no backrow hitters when Murrey and Klineman are in the front. When the setter is also in the front hitting options become very limited. You know, this makes me think that Klineman and Williams should swap positions... Although Williams isn't really an OH1, it would add Klineman as a backrow option for two of the three rotations that Lichtman is setting from the front row.

nice attendance at over 4600. I though California teams didn't draw well. Not this time. Last year the Cal match at Stanford was the last of the year and Maples was almost sold out; almost 8,000 fans, and I think more, just counting paying fans. The crowds came from literally nowhere, like 2-3 times the most fans I had seen in Maples, even during regionals. Sounds like a little of that wore off this year. Was wondering what the crowd would be this year.

I just got back from the match.
First, I want to congratulate Coach Feller and his staff for a masterful game plan that took full advantage of Stanford's limitations... both the inexperience of Rachel Williams and Carly Wopat and the unavailability of Karissa Cook, Jessica Walker and Charlotte Brown (none of the three warmed up). Second, I want to congratulate Cal's players for keeping their spirits up after being thoroughly hammered in set 1... without Stanford's seven service errors, the score would have matched the hitting percentages (well over .400 for Stanford, well under .200 for Cal).
After giving up a long run in two adjacent rotations of death... the two nearly offense-less rotations with Klineman, a middle and four defensive players... the loss of set 2 was more or less inevitable. In set 3, Stanford had a lead but let it slip away with poor focus and execution. When Cal came out in set 4 with fire in their eyes and Stanford came out setting picks on each other on their side of the net, it was clear that the match was over. Overall, I'd have to say that sets 3 and 4 were Stanford's two most disappointing sets of the whole season.
The Cardinal has room for improvement... most notably, Williams can take some better swings on offense and improve on all the block reads she missed and Karissa Cook, Charlotte Brown and Jessica Walker can get healthy enough to play. Against a team with a fast offense like Cal's, Stanford's 5-1 has two ways to lose: two two-hitter, four defensive player rotations of death... blown wide open in set 2 and almost as wide open in later sets... and a Hobson's choice between slower middles that produce more on offense but can't defend against a fast offense and (if they're available) faster middles that can defend against a fast offense but make the rotations of death even more vulnerable. The Cardinal need all three of their injured players back.

What - you'd willingly miss this announcing? I am not really sure what you mean, but I will definitely be there when they meet in Haas Pavillon. It should be another amazing match. Another "amazing" match? Just on the stats and descriptions from others, this match looks pretty far from amazing. Stanford's hitting % in games 2-4 was hideous. If this is what we can expect from Stanford, I would expect Cal to sweep at home and probably win ugly. No, I doubt Cal has any chance to be #1, but they might deserve to be. Stanford, however, deserves to drop out of the top 5, but won't.

if stanford ends up winning this... they have to go back ahead of Florida... right? That depends -- if Cal ends up winning this... do they have to go ahead of Florida? So beachbomb, since you felt Stanford would have been worthy of 1st place with a win, since Cal beat the team you felt worthy of 1st place, that means you're now supporting Cal being 1st place and Stanford being 3rd behind Florida... right?

In case there was any doubt, Lydia Bai did not play. She is almost certainly redshirting this year. For that matter, "Brown" did not play for Stanford (Charlotte Brown, that is). It was (Stephanie) Browne at MB. Cal played great, and Stanford did not.

Was wondering what the crowd would be this year. I eyeballed it this evening and thought it was over 5000. Box score said it was 4681. Whatever. Stanford and Washington are almost always at or near the top of the Pac 10. And IIRC both are in or near the top 10 nationally, at the same time as their other non-football sports are also drawing top 10 nationally--such as mens and womens tennis, soccer, water polo, etc (sports that the midwest does not care much about, it seems).

Is it too late to replace Browne? They couldn't replace Browne because the team only had two middle blockers in shape to play. Charlotte Brown and Jessica Walker didn't warm up.
