Baywatcher, I appreciate your post but I believe it misses the point.
You indicated that the BigWest/WCC know little of ACC volleyball... and of generalization vs. analyzing, and your post 'defaults' to the sad but accurate "if RPI is used" mantra.
The reason 1-2 bids for the Big West/WCC is tough to swallow is because RPI reinforces generalizations that benefit the ACC tremendously.
By ANALYZING what matters, good wins against good teams, the ACC falls short. It is frustrating to read or listen to the notion that the ACC should get 5-6 bids against 1-2 for the Big West when the two conferences play basically at the same level.
Duke gets hammered by Minnesota at home and lost to Colorado State on the road on it's 2 biggest non-conference games. San Diego BEATs Minnesota at home, and then also played Hawaii, Fullerton, Long Beach, Cal. Long Beach beats Colorado State on the road and goes 5 at Texas in its 2 biggest non-conference games.
Really, Maryland didn't beat anyone non-conference, they LOST to Villanove in their signature non-conference match-up . Pacific & Poly beat Arizona on the road. I know these are just a couple of examples, and FSU had some good wins, but the point is that the top five Big West teams (Fullerton, Long Beach, Cal Poly, UCSB, Pacific) are just as good, if not better, than the ACC top five teams (Duke, NC, Miami, FSU, Va Tech) if one analyzes comparable results on the court. But RPI inflation & NCAA lazyness will dictate once again that 5 (and maybe 6, barf) ACC teams get in against possibly 1 Big West team.
It's not a negative against the ACC per se, but since the ACC teams 'trumpet' their inflated RPIs as evidence of NCAA worthiness (which has not translated into results on the court given their tournament performances), then it's to be expected they get negative press.
And the refrain 'travel East' is equally grating, especially when a Cal Poly goes to South Bend for tough matches, then goes to Provo to play Nebraska & Utah, and gets a piss-poor RPI to show for it. Hopefully they go to Maryland/Philadephia next year and load up on the Terrapins, Villanova, and Penn.
Sorry, I guess the whining thread is elsewhere.
