Who are the best male and female actors of all time? Personally, I think Denzel Washington is the best male actor because he can sell any role whether its a good guy, bad guy, serious role or other. I think he was at his best in Training Day. I also think Gene Hackman is one of the best.
As for best female actor, I like Jodie Foster, but its tough to choose just one and very subjective. There are many greats such as Katherine Hepburn, Meryl Streep etc.

And Seven Samurai has to be close to being the best film of all time.
Acting quality can be an apples to oranges thing. Some actors you want to see because of who they are -- they are interesting to watch; some actors you want to see because they are so good at becoming someone else. There can be problems with both types and the truly best manage to do both, in my opinion.

And Seven Samurai has to be close to being the best film of all time. "Close to being"? I think more like "without a doubt". Mifune was also great in a lot of other films, though. I have never seen a film actor who could just reach out and grab your attention so easily. Of the more contemporary movie actors, I would rate John Cusack as the best. For women, it's harder. I have a difficult time separating out their acting presence from how much they made me fall for their character.

For female, I have to go with Kate Hepburn. (Streep, Foster and a couple others are right up there.)
My favorite male actor is Jimmy Stewart. However, for the best, how about Tom Hanks? I don't think I've seen another actor that can become such a variety of characters without me thinking, oh, that is Tom Hanks. Big vs. Philadelphia vs. Forrest Gump... etc.

Your only contribution on this thread is to criticize someone else's OPINION? Classy. Moving on.... DeNiro, Hanks, Penn, Hackman, Washington. K Hepburn, Roberts, Streep.

Can't argue with Tom Hanks . I've always liked Dustin Hoffman, too. Oooh, and Robert Downey Jr. has some potential. Who was the guy in the movie about a man and his son in a concentration camp? Man, he was good. Don't think I've seen him in anything since that movie.
Meryl Streep, no contest, IMHO. I think Sandra Bullock is pretty darn good, too.
Know who I can't stand? Nicholas Cage. Except for "Family Man". Liked the movie, not him.

Who was the guy in the movie about a man and his son in a concentration camp? Man, he was good. Do you mean Roberto Benigni?

Don't know what the name calling reference is about.

Christopher Walken and Pacino. Deniro also. Scarface and Heat are two of my favorite movies.

Didn't Julie Andrews play both male and female in Victor/Victoria? She'd have to be on the list. I never liked Hoffman's female role in Tootsie.
