Gretzky. At least in terms of separating himself from the others in his sport. Woods is another one.
Or do you mean who was the most physically talented athlete? If so, I have no idea. How would you compare sport to sport?

Michael Jordan. Here's a guy who went from someone that didn't start on his high school team and became the best basketball player ever.

Well, since he starred in "The World's Greatest Athlete," the obvious answer is Jan-Michael Vincent.
Unless, of course, you're a Hawaii fan posting on VT. In that case there can only be one answer....JANE CROSON!!!!
On a more serious note: Muhammad Ali. Size, incredible hand and foot speed, physical & mental toughness, Olympic champion, 3 time heavyweight world champ. Unfortunately, like many boxers, he stayed in the game too long.
Other contenders: Willie Mays, Jesse Owens, Rafer Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Jim Thorpe, Jackie Robinson, Roger Federer...

Great call Mike! Secretariat is my third favorite athlete of all time, right behind Muhammad Ali and Stephanie Graf. I still get chills watching replays of his 31 length victory in The Belmont. The "best" athlete? Jackie Joyner-Kersee. I may have picked Babe Didrikson-Zacharias but as most of her career was as a golfer and one does not need to be athletic to be great at golf, I chose not to.

[I may have picked Babe Didrikson-Zacharias but as most of her career was as a golfer and one does not need to be athletic to be great at golf, I chose not to. But look at the time and her overall career. She won two golds and a silver in track ay the LA Olympics, was an AAU All American in basketball, played both softball and baseball, she dove and had in other sports. She went into golf because that was what paid. She also came to it late in life, so she had to learn how to play from scratch at 24. She is just a wunderkind who was great at everything, how many people can you say that about?

You sure it's not because Secretariat's nickname was "Big Red?" Quite sure. In fact I edited my post before submission to eliminate that reference so as not to have to deal with such speculation. I grew up around the thoroughbred horse racing industry and was a "Big Red" fan before a Husker fan.
