[I may have picked Babe Didrikson-Zacharias but as most of her career was as a golfer and one does not need to be athletic to be great at golf, I chose not to. But look at the time and her overall career. She won two golds and a silver in track ay the LA Olympics, was an AAU All American in basketball, played both softball and baseball, she dove and had in other sports. She went into golf because that was what paid. She also came to it late in life, so she had to learn how to play from scratch at 24. She is just a wunderkind who was great at everything, how many people can you say that about? All very good points and very hard to argue against. I'm convinced. *Waving white flag.

You sure it's not because Secretariat's nickname was "Big Red?" Quite sure. In fact I edited my post before submission to eliminate that reference so as not to have to deal with such speculation. I grew up around the thoroughbred horse racing industry and was a "Big Red" fan before a Husker fan. Dude, it was a joke. Not a particularly clever one, but a joke nonetheless. No offense intended.

No no no! I know it was a joke. No offense taken whatsoever!!! It's all good.

Wilt Chamberlain.
Basketball. Volleyball. Track & Field (which he coached.) Wasn't he a hurdler? Can you imagine him as a shot putter? Discus? Javelin? How about if he trained as a football player? Split end?
He had the size, strength and athletic ability to do it all.

Split end? He had the size, strength and athletic ability to do it all. I heard some story about him, although I can't verify the veracity. Supposedly one game he got blocked on a dunk attempt by an opponent. After the game, this player was interviewed by a reporter, who commented on how impressive it was that he blocked the attempt. The player then went on to say that he had to thank Chamberlain, because if he had chosen to continue with the dunk past the attempt, he probably would have made it and broken his defender's arm on the rim.

Bo Jackson....unstoppable in Tecmo bowl We will never know just how great Bo could have been if he had not gotten injured. That guy was a phenom. He not only an an extra gear, he had three.

In some cases, not getting injured is part of being great. Most NFL running backs have only 2-3 good years in them, precisely because they get injured so often. To extend the argument, saying an NFL running back could have been great if he hadn't gotten hurt is kind of like saying a baseball player could have been great if he had been able to hit the curve ball. Durability is part of being great in sports.

Jordan is my choice, but remember Marcus Dupree? If fortunes had turned his way, he probably would have been the greatest running back ever.

Are any of you old enough to remember the "Superstars" competition in the 70's? Pro athletes competed in different sports, totals were given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, etc. They couldn't compete in their own sport, and the winner got some cash. Mary Jo Peppler won the women's competition one year.
Might be a good indicator of "athleticism". Doubt any pros would risk injury to do it now, or rather, their agents wouldn't let them.

Mary Jo, like Wilt, could have been a star in many sports: volleyball, basketball, track & field, softball, and probably tennis & golf.
