Are any of you old enough to remember the "Superstars" competition in the 70's? Pro athletes competed in different sports, totals were given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, etc. They couldn't compete in their own sport, and the winner got some cash. Mary Jo Peppler won the women's competition one year. Might be a good indicator of "athleticism". Doubt any pros would risk injury to do it now, or rather, their agents wouldn't let them. I jus t remember the superstars on with the tv stars. Some great classics on you tube.

At the end of the day when all's said and done, Michael Phelps will go down as the greatest athlete of all time. The kid's barely half way through his career and has won 8 Gold Medals in an Olympic. His performance is individually the greatest sporting performance ever witnessed and with London just around the corner, he has a chance to solidify himself as THE best athlete in all of sports.
But for now, I want to say Michael Jordan not only for his unmatched dexterity but his dominating stamina previously unseen and unmatched by anyone in his time. Also he was the most creative athlete that changed the sport for everyone in the league at the time and great ones like Lebron and Kobe today.
Ali's obviously a hell of an athlete but I think MJ's pure athleticism shown in basketball AND baseball (although not a Babe Ruth, still made MLB), and horse-like stamina was the peak of human athleticism.

Michael Jordan never came close to making the Bigs. He played one season of minor league ball and hit .200. Doesn't take away from his other accomplishments, though - Jordan has to be considered at or near the top of anyone's list But if you're looking at successful multi-sport athletes, Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders were light years ahead of Jordan.
Re: Wilt - amazing athlete at his size. But he wasn't a very good volleyball player.
