I'm still trying to figure this one out. I finally read the book, then I saw the movie today. Mara and Craig are good, but I just don't get it. The thing is poorly written, poorly plotted (and the changes in the movie are not improvements) and way too long. But, above everything else, it's porn.
She's an interesting character, I'll grant you that. But I need a shower.

i haven't seen the movie, but if that's what you took away from the book ("it's porn"), you did it wrong.

Not just run-of-the-mill porn, either. Sado-masochistic porn.
Sure, he's against torturing women. Good for him. But it doesn't stop him from going on and on describing it.
Is the world really like this? I sure hope not.

the book is what, 500 pages long? the stuff you're talking about is the two assaults by bjurman, salander's retaliatory assault on bjurman, and i think there was a bit mentioned about how harriet vangar was raped by her dad and brother. the stuff involving blomkvist was just regular sex. lots of the story does not involve sex. i suppose if you're easily offended then it's not for you.
and of course some segments of the world are like this. i'm not sure why you're expecting to read it and get an accounting of average relationships.

If this was your reaction to the book, why did you go see the movie?
There are people who are like this in real life. Wasn't Jeffrey Dahmer from your neck of the woods? We've had a few notable ones from around here, too. Fortunately, most people are not like this.
But the story is really a combination of a thriller about the journalist's investigation mixed with a revenge tale and character study of the girl. It's not "porn."
(I haven't seen either version of the movie, so I can't comment on any changes that may have been made from the book.)

You are forgetting the serial killer(s) and their victims. I went to see it because Fincher makes good movies and I wanted to see what he did with the book. I am not such a prude that I can't sit through stuff I find objectionable. I saw the Nanny McPhee sequel for chrissakes.

The book is superior to the film, it will always be that way. In this case the Swedish film with subtitles is better than what they will churn out in Hollywood. I had just finished reading all three when I watched the Swedish film and they complemented each other quite nicely. The character in the Swedish version is the same actress in Sherlock Holmes 2, she's intense just the way I imagine Lisbeth.

I think there's a very fine line movies and TV walk when dealing with extreme violence -- especially when it's sexual -- and I am bothered by shows/movies that use it for pure entertainment.
It would have helped if it were written better and if the plot wasn't so obvious. But, even so, this world is as preposterous as the Twilight world. And for what purpose?

I recall a line from Jane Wiedlin's song "Capture The Light": I used to hunt for darkness, and it would follow me wherever I go Not grammatical, but spot on... if you live this sort of crap, it'll come to own you. Watching it? Maybe, maybe not... but I prefer not to take that chance.

I usually watch the movie first and then read the book. If I do the reverse, I'll always be disappointed in the movie.

The world in the Twilight movies does not exist either.
I think.
(I also think it makes perfect sense.)
