FYI, Barboza is playing the Hermosa Open this weekend (with Traci Weamer, a good young player), her first pro beach event since 2005. Thanks for this info. If Barboza is still dealing with knee issues, sand is definitely easier on the knees. Debatable. Very debatable.

The same reason Touzinsky went to Beijing in 2008: intangibles. Could you please expound on Touzinsky? What was his game and intangibles like and its similarities to Barboza? I am not an expert of Touzinsky's game in 2008 or of his intangible qualities that led to his selection to the 2008 Olympic Team. You'll have to ask Hugh those questions (or find the appropriate "The Net Live" interview). When you have that information, you can draw the similarities to Barboza yourself.

Touzinsky seems like a really good guy. Like one of those that's super positive. Funny. Someone you wouldn't mind being stuck in the car with on a long trip. Brightens the mood of the team. However, he's not just a glorified cheerleader. Although he can't terminate consistently at the highest level, he's a very strong passer/defender. So he can contribute on court as a sub. I'm sure Barboza met the quality of brightening up the team, but her passing/defensive skills are not the same as Miyashiro's. And as discussed many times, her offense is not the level of Hodge's. With Davis struggling, Miyashiro's addition seemed more necessary. If we're still comparing to the 2008 men's team, Scott-Aruda is the Tom Hoff although she's probably even more capable of contributing on court. Funny thing tho, IMO if Sykora were at her level pre-injury, I would have voted to leave out Davis and Miyashiro, and bring both Glass and Thompson to back up Berg. Miyashiro doesn't have tons to offer, but she's like insurance if Davis struggles or gets injured. There's likely no need to sub out Larson or Tom in the back row as they are strong receivers. Courtney Thompson is a better server than Miyashiro and can play good D. Glass would be insurance for Berg struggling.

Miyashiro is not there to back up Davis. She's the best serving specialist in the gym now.

Scott Touzinsky has been nursing some chronic injuries for quite some time now....could be the main reason why he is not on this team...as far as Barboza goes, she looked damned good in that naked picture of the Women's national Team members ;D

If serving were her best skill (it's not - passing and defending are her strengths), they would not have brought her. They could have brought Richards as a serving specialist/backup OH, but having a back up libero/DS seems more necessary. Courtney Thompson has a much much tougher serve than Miyashiro.

I would argue that Thompson is a better server than Miyashiro. Anyways, if Sykora was in her 2010 form, the one to get cut would be Davis. And no, Richards is not effective in serving. She's a better version of Barboza, good at everything, but great at nothing.

Was just curious as to your thoughts since in answer as to why Barboza would have a spot on the OG team, you referenced him.

I also searched the forum and found posts from MarsH and USAFAN about Touzinsky in 2008.
