The way the USA team played in the WL finals today and the World Cup last November, IMO, the Olympics will be an early exit even if they sneak into the second round. Therefore something to think about who's in and who's out for the next Olympics, World Cup and World League: (based on this years Olympic Roster)
OUT: Knipe Sato Larsen (need new direction and life in the coaching staff) Salmon Lotman Millar Stanley Priddy Rooney Thornton Hansen Gardner
IN: Spreaw Anderson Holmes Lee Smith (wow, not much left of the core players)
TBD: Holt Winder Jablonsky Patak Suxho Mckenzie

Well, I think the big question is which young guys to bring in. Who will be ready by 2016? Ciarelli, Menzel, Clark, Troy, Davis, Shoji and Shoji seem like some of the strongest candidates, but there are a ton of young guys who should get looks right after London.

I would give Sander a shot, throw him at the wolves to get him ready for Rio. Also really hope Erik Shoji works out at libero, tired of Lambourne.
Also don't forget about Brad Lawson.

Well, I like Lawson a lot, but apparently he's on the A2 circuit in Italy, while Ciarelli will be A1 this season. With Sander coming a couple years behind, and Menzel in front of him, all much better athletes I don't think there's much room for him. I think both Shojis are the future at their respective positions. And I agree, put Sander out there, I don't think he'll leave BYU early so he needs to get all the international experience he can get before Rio.

I'm really excited to see how this new generation of players develops over the next quad. The current Olympic team has no charisma at all, which explains why they got such limited media hype in '08 despite winning a gold medal. There was a surge in volleyball popularity after '84 and '88 because of players like Kiraly and Timmons. Friends of mine who had never followed volleyball knew about the guy with the funny name and the guy with the red flat top. Going into the London games, I don't see NBC paying much attention to any of the current players. It'll be fun to see players like Troy, Sander, Menzel, Ciarelli, and the Shoji's bring some excitement back to the national team.

He is a great talent obviously but he is not a team leader with any charisma. You seem to have an obsession with Lawson, sorry to break it to you but all of those guys have more pure talent in one finger than Lawson has in his entire body..

Stanley's serve alone is more exciting than those Players and I like the Shoji's and Sander but they won't be media darlings!
Lawson is gonna make you look like a fool!

One thing to keep in mind with Sander and the chances of playing in the 2016 games is that he still has to fulfill his year-long LDS mission. Most BYU players redshirt during their mission year.

I agree about Stanley and his great serve but he is about to be 35. He is finished with the US when the olympics end. You understand that. His serves and his hiting is exciting but his personality is not. But I guess that's not relevant. Lawson might emerge but right now he is behind some guys by a good margin...

Player personality is very relevant, especially in an Olympic year. Men's volleyball has one chance every four years to get some coverage and when the players have no star power, the game loses it's chance to reach a huge audience. Not saying that the guys have to put on an act... they are who they are. Just saying it's a shame nobody on the team has any natural charisma.

That Michael Phelps has a great personality doesn't he?? ;D I think making history gets you more attention than having "star power" Player personality is very relevant, especially in an Olympic year. For sure, most of Phelps' popularity comes from winning multiple gold medals, but he does have that boy-next-door/aw shucks vibe that appeals to a whole lot of young (and not so young) girls. Probably has something to do with competing half naked. Nevertheless, Phelps is much better in an interview than Clay Stanley who looks like a deer in headlights.

Friendly reminder, just about all of us wish Lloy Ball were setting this Olympics and he's 40. Scott-Arruda is playing for the women's side. Clay being 39 makes it probable that he'll retire, and maybe he should, but let's not bury the man yet.
Also, Rooney and Thornton are still young, so putting there names on this list is a talent evaluation and not a statement of age. If Speraw does take the team, I imagine he'll keep his boy Thornton around.

If you don't go on a mission before starting college, chances of going at all, drop. If you don't go after your first year of college, chances of going drop DRAMATICALLY. And given he's been THE MAN for the past two seasons on that team, I HIGHLY doubt he's going to serve. If he steps foot on the court this year, the mission aint gonna happen...
