Sorry, VolleyVolley, I beleive this is UNC's year. They finished strong last year, gained invaluable experience in the NCAA tourney, have a lot of talent returning and they are due despite having good teams(last title in 2008). It will be a battle with Miami also in the mix, but I think the 'Heels will prevail. Let the speculation begin. I do believe UNC will play tough this season. it will be a fight at the top between FSU -UNC and Miami. However, in the end FSU will come out on top. Head coach Chris Poole has schedule pre conference very tough and those tourneys will be very telling on how FSU will hold together. They play Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, Long Beach, Kentucky, Florida, Texas A&M to name a few right out of the gate ..

If FSU does well in their preseason, it would be a huge help to the conference overall in terms of rpi. None of the other top teams play top 20 rpi teams (the strongest teams UNC and Notre Dame play are each other in a non-conference match at the beginning of the year at a MTSU tournament). As much as I don't like the team, I also feel that Notre Dame will challenge for a top spot in the conference. They don't get much attention because they're new to the conference but they return two honorable mention all-americans. I wonder if either of the Virginia teams will be able to take advantage of their top recruiting classes.

Unfortunately, you are correct. In the past years, UNC HAS scheduled a lot tougher, but this year(for whatever reason) not so tough. I have in the past advocated scheduling tough, not only for the RPI factor, but i do believe you strenghen your team up by playing excellent competition. The 2008 UNC team is a good example. They went 6-5 in the preseason playing 5 top-20 ranked teams(Illinois, New Mexico State, Colorado State,Oregon amd Minnesota) going 1-4 in the process, but beating an excellent, 8th ranked Minnesota on the road and then going on to win the ACC(co-chamos with Duke) including a nice 9 match winning streak to end the regular season. They also beat American U in the NCAA btfore falling to Pac 10 power Oregon 3-1. That being said, UNC's schedule is not as difficult this year while Fla State's is more difficult. I still believe UNC wins the conference although the schedule makers did them no favors as they only play Fla State and Miami once each, both on the road.

Update on Florida State:
Ranked #18 in AVCA preseason Coaches poll. ACC Preseason poll not out yet... Hoping that they will be recognized by ACC voting committee to win the ACC for a third straight year.
Garnett and Gold Scrimmage tomorrow. Word has it that the Walch sisters are killing it on the pins, Middles are blocking extremely well, Wickstrom is running a quick offense and Mosher is passing and digging on point. It should all come together tomorrow. We will see..
Next weekend is the Long Beach tourney vs. Kentucky, Illinois and LBSU.
Let the season begin ! Go Noles !

Volleyvolleyfan, You chewed me out before when I stated that FSU would not do as well this season, and I still believe that to be the case. You have a freshman replacing an experienced senior setter, and a redshirt middle replacing a very good senior middle. The other girl, Green I believe, has been rumored to be plagued by chronic health problems and probably won't be that much of a factor. However if the Walch girls crank it up and the freshman setter does well, maby FSU can repeat. My money is on UNC.

True they lost Freeman in the middle but Neff is there and Burrington just came off playing with the JNT.. Wickstrom is the junior setter and if Poole runs a 5-1 Wickstrom will run a fast offense..IF he decides to run a 6-2 then freshman Hailey Lukes (senior ace #40 will step up ) UNC will be good this year no doubt about it but my money is still on FSU !

Saw the FSU scrimmage and the Seminoles look great, at least final four this year. Hailey Luke is the real deal and Izzy Carmona played great. Watch out for the Walch sisters and the rest of the 2012 recruiting class. Team already looks in mid-season form.

Watch out for the Walch sisters and the rest of the 2012 recruiting class. Team already looks in mid-season form. Nolefan-- Welcome to Volleytalk. I was also at the Garnett and Gold Scrimmage yesterday. GOLD TEAM: S: Hailey Luke OH: Leah Mikesky OH: Nicole Walch OPP: Izzy Carmona Middle: Sarah Burrington Libero: Katie Mosher GARNETT TEAM: S: Sarah Wickstrom OH: Oli Medic OH: Alumni MH Ashley Neff MH Mara Green OPP: Elise Walch Libero: Laura Dadowski Obervations: Pin Hitters were INCREDIBLE !! Walch sisters put on a clinic ! Freshman, Izzy Carmona was nailing it too ! Setters: Both were running a very fast offense. Most likley a 6-2 will be run this season after watching Haily step into her role. She looked like a seasoned setter. Middles were blocking strong and libero Mosher, playing with the freshman and Redshirt freshman kept the passing and digging strong to the setter's hands allowing Luke many options. Gold won the match in 5 sets. 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 26-24, 16-14 ! Next weekend in Long Beach will be more telling. Illinois on Friday morning and Kentucky on Friday night. then LBSU on Saturday. I am very encouraged by the team's chemistry and the new coach has quickly found his niche with the team. GO NOLES !!

What do you think FSU fans? A close first match of the season loss to a B1G team is not a big deal. This was a more important match for Illinois than for FSU. However, I think it will be very telling if the Noles come away with an 0-3 record in this tourney.

A win would have been HUGE for Seminoles. Especially for a team just a few posts above is suppose to make it to the FF. To do that you need quality wins. I realize you are a Seminole fan but please be realistic. A split squad scrimmage cannot tell you what your team is going to look like against quality opponents. Remove the blinders.
