So here's a question: We're pretty sure that Amber MacDonald will be walking on because there are only going to be five scholarships freed by our seniors' graduation. Walk-ons can't sign NLIs (NLIs have to be accompanied by an athletic aid offer in order to be valid), but they sign some non-NLI document so they can participate in the ceremony at their school and get their picture in the paper, etc.
I know that coaches cannot talk about prospective scholarship students until an NLI is signed, but what are the rules regarding preferred walk-ons? Assuming MacDonald is a walk-on, when will Sheffield be able to comment publicly on her? Once the signing period is over? Once she's admitted to the school? Not until summer?

I thought I would post my question here because no one responded in the walk on thread. Can someone please clarify the rules for publicly commenting on a walk on? Wisconsin had on their website a write up on all 6 players yesterday and tweeted pictures with comments. However, there are only 5 scholarships available and from what everyone has said MacDonald is a walk on. UW doesn't release admissions decisions until the end of January. I'm sure UW knows what they are doing and following all NCAA rules but according to NCAA Bylaws: 13.10.3 Publicity After Commitment. There are no restriction on publicity related to a prospective student-athlete after he or she has signed a National Letter of Intent or the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid or after the institution has received his or her financial deposit in response to its offer of admission, except as set forth in Bylaw 13.10.1The NLI is a financial aid agreement. Recruited walk ons typically sign a fake agreement for pictures and school publicity. I must be missing something. Can someone with real knowledge, please explain how they are allowed to publicly comment on MacDonald.

Tons of competition for PT next year. Looking at the depth chart, we have: S: Carlini, H. Juley, E. Juley OH/RS: Bates, Kriskova, Fricano, Duello, Saunders MB: Nelson, Blake, Williams, Morgan L/DS: Morey, McDonald Hannah Juley comes in to an interesting situation because she's riding the bench for 2 years behind Carlini, then has to compete with Hilley who is going to be a top notch recruit her senior year. Same with Blake, who I don't see beating out the other three middles over the next two years. That said, Badgers will have massive depth for the next several seasons.

Can someone with real knowledge, please explain how they are allowed to publicly comment on MacDonald. I have no real knowledge as to MacDonald's particular situation, but here is what I know: - The university can comment on a walk-on after they've signed a written offer of admission and paid their deposit.
- The University of Wisconsin has no formal Early Decision process separate from regular admissions, but they start accepting applications in September of a HS student's senior year and do rolling admissions throughout the year. I remember friends applying very early in our senior year, and finding out that they were accepted in early November. The university averages about an 8-week turnaround time for admission decisions, and it's probably faster earlier in the year because they have fewer applications to work through at once.
- Carefully read the article on the Wisconsin site where they announced the recruits ( www.uwbadgers.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/111214aaa.html ). They mentioned "signing," but nowhere did they mention NLIs.
So based on these facts, I'm conjecturing that MacDonald submitted her application in early September and it was strong enough that the university went ahead and offered her admission. She probably accepted that offer and submitted her deposit already, so that she could be presented with the rest of the recruiting class on Signing Day.

Same with Blake, who I don't see beating out the other three middles over the next two years. That said, Badgers will have massive depth for the next several seasons. I would imagine that Hannah Juley will redshirt next year. We don't need 3 active setters on the depth chart, and it'll be EJ's senior year. If anyone's going to sub in for LC, it'd be EJ. I think this is especially the case because HJ didn't play high school or club as a junior because of a severe foot injury requiring two surgeries. She took private lessons over the summer, played HS this fall, and will likely play club this spring, but I would imagine another year of maturation wouldn't hurt her. Also, if HJ redshirts, then she'll have three years of eligibility left when Hilley arrives in 2017, giving us good depth and competition for the position. Additionally, by redshirting HJ, Sheffield evens up the scholarship balance between the recruiting classes. Right now, we think the schollie situation looks like this: 2016: Dodge, taking the schollie freed by Morey's graduation. 2017: Hilley, Loberg, Rettke, and Whalen (schollie), filling the schollies freed by the graduations of Blake, Carlini, Kriskova, and Nelson. 2018: 2 schollies freed by Bates & Fricano's graduations. 2019: 5 schollies freed by the graduations of Duello, Juley, Morgan, Saunders, and Williams. 2020: 1 scholarship, freed by the graduation of Dodge. Redshirting Juley means a scholarship is held up 'til 2020, which puts two recruits there instead of one, and only 4 players to replace after the 2019 season. One other thought: Don't be surprised to see one of the 2017s coming in the spring of 2017, as Blake matriculated early and her scholarship will be available right away after the 2016 season ends.
