I always thought Chris Evans deserve to be in more (and different) roles. He's a talented actor, but Hollywood mostly see him as a superhero actor type. Chris Evans was also great in Knives Out. I thought he was really good in The Grey Man with Ryan Gosling and Knives Out Co-star Ana de Armas.

High Noon/The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance double feature. 3rd viewing for each. Still like both of them very much, and I'm not interested in debating which one is better. I think they are good companion pieces for a certain era of Hollywood Western, both subversive in their own ways. I actually meant to watch Rio Bravo, but mis-remembered Liberty Valance as the Ford/Wayne response to High Noon. Rio Bravo will have to wait, because I've been looking forward to watching the four Jimmy Stewart/Mann Western collaborations.

Then decide which movie (they're basically the same) is better.

Marvel had a 10 year run where the median film was fine to decent and almost always fun at the very least. They managed a couple genuinely good ones, even (Winter Soldier, Black Panther come to mind) and the Avengers films felt like an event. Everything post-Endgame feels tired and looks like sh*t.

I still say Guardians 3 was solid and a great way to end that trilogy. Everything else cinematically, held no interest for me, although I heard that Wakanda 2 was good. As always, YMMV. Bottomline still being that a good Superhero movie will, theoretically, draw people. Case in point (although not Marvel) The Batman.

Saw an interesting Iron Man 4….maybe preview? Has Stark’s daughter all grown up and embodying her father’s personality and thoughts into a chip and plant it in an AI robot. In short, Tony Stark returns as an AI and things happen. Was a really well made “preview”, but is it fake?

Bottomline still being that a good Superhero movie will, theoretically, draw people. Case in point (although not Marvel) The Batman. I think there are some other things going on. First, I think most people are more selective about how they spend their entertainment dollars after Covid. A lot of people got out of the habit of going to the movies the way they once did. So you have to make a quality project if you want a lot of people to show up. With the MCU specifically, a lot of it feels rather pointless after Endgame. I mean, the movie literally has "Endgame" in its title. It reminded me of when Mass Effect 3 released DLC months after the game. I couldn't get into it because I had already saved the galaxy. When the Legendary Edition was released on PS4 in 2021, I replayed the entire trilogy. And this time, I played through the Mass Effect 3 DLC before I beat the game. I found it to be a lot more enjoyable. I haven't seen a single MCU movie since Endgame. I agree that a good Superhero movie will still get people to come out, such as Across the Spiderverse. I would note that The Batman made less money than Batman v. Superman, which is a bad movie. But box office numbers can be a lagging indicator. Batman Begins made less than $400 million at the box office, but that is in large part due to the franchise being effectively dead post-Schumacher. The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises both topped $1 billion, and I think Batman v. Superman benefited from and squandered the goodwill from those movies. Speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy, I haven't seen the third movie yet, but I have been playing the Guardians of the Galaxy video game on my PS4. It is really good. The main plot is pretty strong, the gameplay is fun, and the character interactions throughout are the best part of the game. I'd give it a 9/10.

I don't normally give a hoot about the Oscars. But I just learned Godzilla Minus One won the best vfx award. For once, that is such a well deserved win. Congrats to the Godzilla Minus One team!

In light of Oppenheimer winning Best Picture at the Oscars, I moved it up to third on my Christopher Nolan movie rankings:
1. The Dark Knight Rises 1a. Inception 3. Oppenheimer 4. Batman Begins 5. The Dark Knight 6. Dunkirk 7. Interstellar 8. Memento 9. The Prestige 10. Insomnia 11. Tenet 12. Following

There is a new Alien movie coming out. The last two movies in the alien universe, Prometheus and Alien Covenant, received mixed reviews. Not outright bad by any means, but they were not necesarily what the audience wanted. Well here we got a new alien movie, and it looks like the new alien movie willl be returning the horror franchise to its roots. It takes place between Alien and Aliens (hence between the first and second movie). The evil corporation in the Alien universe, Weyland-Yutani, is once more involved and up to no good:
