I watched The Force Awakens, and in large part it just seemed like basically a clone of the first Star Wars -- only without the really special elements that made that first movie so good. This is what I don't get with the praise that the critics heaped onto TFA. I mean yeah, it was certainly a watchable and decent movie. But the critics made it sound as if it was so out of this world and I just don't feel it was like that. A good movie sure, but forgive me for being crude and vulgar for one moment, it's like the critics were jacking-off and having an orgasm experience while watching the movie. I mean come on, it wasn't that great. Maybe they got screwed over by the terrible dialogue and Jar Jar Binks in the prequels to such an extent that seeing anything better they would treat as masterpiece. I don't know, I just don't get this euphoric response to TFA from critics and so-called fans. Yeah, I think a lot of the initial positive reaction to TFA was simply that it wasn't the prequels. As you said, it's not bad, especially if you have no frame of reference (i.e. you don't know how great the original trilogy is), but it's highly derivative and just isn't memorable. If you compare the Death Star sequence in A New Hope to the Death Star Starkiller Base sequence, it's like night and day. The former is incredibly tense, and the latter felt casual. Now, I think the critics should have recognized the flaws in TFA, but they were so desperate for a good new Star Wars movie that they overlooked them.

Watched all four Indiana Jones movies this past week. I'd seen 1 and 2 before but a long time ago. All pretty good. The plot of 3 seemed a little fast-paced to me but Sean Connery made up for it. 4 was bad. Ancient aliens is a fun TV show but not good as the plot to a movie. The first one was great. The second one was very disappointing -- almost a parody of the first one. The third one recovered some of the fun of the first one, but was mainly highlighted by the interaction between Indy and his dad. I never saw the fourth one, which is famous (infamous) for the "Indy survives a nuclear bomb by hiding in a refrigerator" scene. I haven't seen every film by Lucas, but if I had to say which Lucas film was the best, I would probably pick American Graffiti. I generally agree with this analysis, though Last Crusade is actually my favorite of the four, just ahead of Raiders. You're not missing much on the fourth one. The "nuclear fridge" is probably the single dumbest scene I've ever seen in a movie (i.e. where I just couldn't suspend my disbelief), and I'm not even sure if that was the biggest flaw of the movie. I'll never forget wasting $28 to take my girlfriend to see that movie (Manhattan ticket prices were like double what I was used to) and then immediately watching Last Crusade once we got home just to get the taste out of my mouth.

John Wick 3
Fun but mindless action film. Lots of cool fight and stunt choreography. Totally unrealistic sequences but that's the John Wick franchise in a nutshell. Acting is blah. Story is blah.
I still like the first film the best.

I saw Ford v Ferrari last night with my daughter. Much to my surprise, it was her pick. We both enjoyed it very much.
Funny story...to me at least. On the way to the theater, I made a comment about Carroll Shelby. My daughter asked who that was, and I said, "in a couple of hours, you'll know." We were watching the movie. It opens with a scene of Shelby racing and then has another scene with him at the doctor. Then there's a scene with Ken Miles working in his garage. Finally, after establishing both of those main characters, Miles' wife walks into his garage and my daughter asked, "Is that the 'Carol' woman you were talking about?"

Having not seen the movie but having seen the trailers, did they compress the timeline? Ford took the GT40 to Le Mans for several years until they managed to rework it into something that could win.

Yes, but not as much as the trailer might have you believe. There is a line in the trailer that is somewhat misleading. In an effort to avoid spoilers, I'll not say more.

Spoilers? It is a bio-pic, right? Did they extend the story to the point where Miles was killed? He was testing what eventually became the Mk. IV, the only version that was completely American-made. The track he died at doesn't exist anymore. IIRC, it's a shopping mall. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverside_International_Raceway

And the fact that they're taking liberties with the timeline does potentially create an issue with spoilers as far as the story-telling in this particular movie. When I watched the movie and saw that scene (without ever having seen the trailer), I didn't know if that was how the movie was going to go. And, yes, they did.

I suppose many people won't know the story now, but of course a single search in Google will bring up the basic facts.
I got into sports car racing for a while. (I didn't race, but I did a lot of track days and was a driving instructor. I did work a race weekend as a corner-worker, i.e. flagger.)
As an engineer I find the Chaparral story more interesting. They were a lot more innovative with a lot less money to work with. But the Ford Le Mans story has the whole flag-waving, stick-it-to-the-snobby-Europeans thing going for it.

But, I suppose "Shelby and Miles v Ford" doesn't really have the same ring to it...or the flag-waving appeal.

I saw Uncut Gems, which was quite good, though Adam Sandler's character might be the most infuriatingly self-destructive I've seen since Jerry Lundegaard in Fargo. I also watched The Irishman, which was pretty good, though a bit overrated. It's not in the same universe as either Goodfellas or Casino.

Haven't seen too many posts on Star Wars IX. Wonder if people don't find much to talk about nowadays. saying it's better than VIII isn't saying much. Just glad we won't have any more. Time to put the franchise in frozen carbonite, and unlike Han Solo, never rescue or resurrect it.
good riddance.
