Haven't seen too many posts on Star Wars IX. Wonder if people don't find much to talk about nowadays. saying it's better than VIII isn't saying much. Just glad we won't have any more. Time to put the franchise in frozen carbonite, and unlike Han Solo, never rescue or resurrect it. good riddance. Still would have liked to know what Ep IX would have been had Carrie Fisher not passed away. Better yet, what Lucas had planned for Ep VII-IX.

Well, I was invited to go see the Star Wars movie tomorrow night. I never saw the previous one, but I suppose I'll figure things out.

Well, considering that this movie spends a lot of time retconning stuff from the previous one, you're probably better off not having seen it.

It was rather ironic that Harrison Ford (who is not dead) and Mark Hamill (who is not dead) played dead people, while Carrie Fisher (who is dead) played a live person. I'm not quite sure how they did that. Reusing stock footage, I suppose, and also CGI. There were a few scenes where they obviously cut between seeing Fisher's face to seeing her from behind (I assume played by a double) and back again.

Also, as much as I like Lando, Billy Dee Williams looks really old at this point. Which makes sense, given that he's 82. During the movie, I joked to my friend that CGI Leia looked more lifelike and realistic than real Lando, which elicited a big laugh. I think I have a minority viewpoint on this, but I really think that instead of trotting out the aging cast of the original movies (and having one literally die in the middle), they should have just recast the main characters and set the sequels a few years after Return of the Jedi. The excellent Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn could have been the basis for the new movies.

they should have just recast the main characters They pretty nearly did, actually. For the most part, these last three movies seemed to be essentially a reboot of the original three. Daisy Ridley was fantastic. It was an excellent choice to cast her as the Luke figure.

Just watched The Fly and Videodrome. Trying to get brushed up on older horror. Both good, great vfx and decent acting, but really short. The plots seemed half developed by the end of the movie. Lend themselves to sequels that didn't get made or weren't good.

But I guess that's a matter of perspective.

What's your favorite soft reboot? Probably X-Men: First Class, which is one of my two or three favorite superhero movies of all time. It's too bad they couldn't keep the momentum going. I would have liked to have seen what the director of First Class, Matthew Vaughn, would have done with its sequels instead of Bryan Singer.

Some films I saw in the past 5 years that really stood out for me were three ultra violent Japanese films:
Outrage (2010) Beyond Outrage (2012) 13 Assassins (2010)
The Outrage film series consists of Outrage, Beyond Outrage, and Outrage Coda. I have not seen the third film in the trilogy. They are about power struggles of a yakuza gang. I remember being very gripped by the story, some outrageous moments, and a lot of gratuitous violence.
13 Assassins is a samurai film about a group of Assassins who band together to kill some doof. Very cinematic and violent.
My wife refused to watch these films because of the violence. However, she has no qualms about watching the TV series Supernatural which has more decapitations and blood splatter than most violent films. But she says Supernatural is cartoonish and fake-looking, so it’s okay.
