I think Westerlund can play on the RS. I could also see Orie possibly backing up the pin players next year if she decides to stick around. She looks comfortable swinging on the right pin from the times they've lined her up there during warm-ups. Plus, it might make things easier for her as she would just have to set the block, instead of transitioning pin-to-pin as a MB. I would love to see Orie and Blair transfer to the pins. We need more depth there. Orie has experience playing as a six rotation pin hitter.

For the 2018-2019 season, I am counting 9 scholarship players (*) at this time. Yaazie Bedart-Ghani – SR * Morgan Johnson - SR * Natalie Gilbert – SR Micaya White – RS/JR* Orie Agbaji – JR * Blair Westerlund – JR Claire Hahn - JR Autumn Rounsaville –JR Riley Fisbeck – JR* Ashley Shook – SO * Lexi Sun – SO * Olivia Zelon – SO Brionne Butler – RS/FR* Asjia O’Neal – FR * Sydney Peterson – FR Jhenna Gabriel – FR I'm suspecting the incoming freshmen DS's will not be on scholarship or they would have had a formal signing ceremony at their respective school. A pin hitter would be nice for some depth, but I'd rather Elliott save a scholarship for a transferring D1 Libero who can step in and immediately replace McCoy. Autumn, Claire, and Natalie are not up to par. We haven't seen Olivia play but if she were able to play at a high level, she would be seeing the court this season IMO. Jhenna is a setter who may need time to transition to a DS role and both she and Sydney will be trying to acclimate to the college game. I, personally, would like to see an experienced libero in the backcourt next year. Why do y’all have so many open scholarships? Do they expect to sign more players on April 11th or are they holding them for transfers? Reward them to walk-ons?

Texas, most years, seems to not offer four year scholarships to libero/ds types. Now, once August rolls around they might have two libero types on scholarship. Maybe this year they are hoping for a OH/ MB transfer.

But what if........the true scholarship count is: Yaazie Bedart-Ghani – SR * Morgan Johnson - SR * Natalie Gilbert – SR Micaya White – RS/JR* Orie Agbaji – JR * Blair Westerlund – JR **Claire Hahn - JR Autumn Rounsaville –JR Riley Fisbeck – JR* Ashley Shook – SO * Lexi Sun – SO * Olivia Zelon – SO **Brionne Butler – RS/FR* Asjia O’Neal – FR * Sydney Peterson – FR **Jhenna Gabriel – FR Hold on here. Why would Jerritt redshirt a walkon? (Zelon). And what if he does in fact value a libero (Peterson) enough to give a scholarship? And why would one assume that a hitter/blocker (Westerlund) NOT have scholarship? That adds up to 12. www.scholarshipstats.com/volleyball.htmThe last great defensive player we had, that was continually referred to as a walk-on, was Kat Brooks. But then again....they never mention the non-scholarship nature of Hahn, Rounsaville, or Gilbert either.

Would love to have Ally join Texas! UT will be in a precarious situation for those '20 and '21 classes the way their position and scholarship distribution will play out. If they add 2 kids to the '20 class including a setter, they might only have 2 scholarships for '21 with no less than 5-6 potential top 20 senior aces in the state for that class. What makes it even harder is that the Woodards are a package deal, so that's two scholarships right there. On one hand, it's nice to have all that local talent. On the other, they have to hope to guess right because some of those girls they dont choose will probably end up 1st team All-Americans elsewhere.

There will always be elite players in the state of Texas who we don't offer, or who choose schools other than Texas. Nothing new.
Looking forward:
2017: S - Ashley Shook (Plainfield, IL) L/DS - Olivia Zelon (Santa Monica, CA) OH - Lexi Sun (Solana Beach, CA)
2018: MB - Brionne Butler (Kendleton, TX) MB - Asjia O'Neal (Southlake, TX) L/DS - Sydney Petersen (IA) S - Jhenna Gabriel (Honolulu, HI)
2019: MB - Molly Phillips (Mansfield, TX) OH - Logan Eggleston (Brentwood, TN) OH - Skylar Fields (Missouri City, TX)
2020: S - Naomi Cabello (Clermont, FL) MB/OH - Madison Williams (Mansfield, TX)
I'd say we will take one more for 2020 (might already be in the bag according to bball).
Then, for 2021, we'll have at least 3 spots available.
