Some notes on UC Irvine's match. - UCI used a 6-2 platooning setters senior Mackenzie Campbell and freshman Shelley Anderson. - UCI trailed for most of the 3rd and 4th sets but came back to win them both 25-21. - UCI out blocked Texas A&M Corpus Christi 22 to 12 led by 6 block assists from RS junior MB Arielle Manz. - Freshman OH Cassie Pickrell led UCI with 12 kills hitting 0.310. Must be nice for a Texas girl like Pickrell in her first college match to lead UCI to victory over a Texas school. Also Cal Poly transfer junior Allison Lee lead UCI with 9 digs. New comers Pickrell, Lee and freshman Anderson played all 4 sets for UCI while freshman libero Arden Davis contributed in the last 2 sets. Overall a good showing by 4 of UCI's new players. - Some info on Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Last season they had an RPI of 110 and finished 3rd in the Southland conference with a record of 21-11. - Texas A&M CC, mascot the islanders, is a rare school that's located closer to the beach than UC Irvine is. - Here's an aerial view of their campus on Ward Island.

Denver tournament notes.
- The 2 Colorado based teams Air Force and Denver will have the advantage of knowing how to serve in the altitude. It's obviously hurting UC Irvine. I don't remember when UCI committed more service errors than the 17 against Texas A&M CC yesterday.
- Air Force took the 1st set over Denver yesterday before losing in 4 (25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 17-25).
- Against Air Force UCI was down 15-20 in the 2nd set and was potentially looking at getting swept. But UCI never gave up, won the 2nd set and went on to beat Air Force in 5.
- UCI continued to out block their opponent 24 - 16 in block assists vs Air Force.
- Yesterday it was the newcomers that shined for UCI. Today the veterans led the way with senior OH Aly Squires downing 18 kills while hitting 0.311 and getting 20 digs. RS sophomore OH Marisa Bubica added 15 kills and 8 block assists while senior MB Shannon Fleming chipped in 10 kills & 6 block assists.

UC Irvine will play Denver for the tournament title. Here's some info on the pioneers. - Denver def. Texas A&M Corpus Christi 3-1 = 25-21, 22-25, 25-10, 25-11 earlier today. - Denver is picked to finish 3rd in the Summit League. - Here's a video of Denver doing their preseason training at the USA Olympic Training Center. www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10103934438899721&set=vb.137793216260340&type=2&theaterWhat's better, being trained at the Olympic Training Center or being trained by former Olympic coaching staff? Both are nice but advantage UCI. - Denver was very tough at home last season going 8-2 as this highlight video points out. - And finally the team certainly knows how to have a fun time.
