Cincinnati graduated 6 seniors last year. Two OH, 1 setter, 2 MB, and 1 DS. All six of them made a significant impact on the team and its results. Currently, at any given time, there are only 2 (1 MB & 1 DS) playing that had a good amount of playing time last year. Another OH split time with one of the seniors last year but isn't seeing much playing time this season. Not having the senior libero in the lineup also makes a difference. With that being said, obviously one of the most noticeable differences between this year and last year is personnel. The starting lineup is mostly made up of freshman. This season can easily be labeled as a rebuilding year. To automatically blame the coach, IMO, is a bit unfair. They brought in a volunteer assistant from a volleyball institute in Ohio with vast experience in the game. With his knowledge of the game, there's absolutely no reason this team doesn't improve (and they already have in the past few months, although their current record doesn't reflect that). The potential is there and of course those girls work hard and want to win.
The main problem I've seen is their ability (or lack thereof) to finish. They gain leads on teams then let them back in by making unnecessary and avoidable errors. They just need to be more consistent.
For a team that is currently 0-21, their spirits remain high. You wouldn't know you were watching a team that is 0-21 warm-up if you sat and observed. They stay positive, continue to work hard and will without a doubt continue to improve. No matter how this season finishes, they will make huge leaps in the off season and I don't doubt that we will see a much better and obviously more experienced team come next season. And I do believe Molly will still be the one leading the way.

But they have won 10 total games in 21 matches, that doesn't suggest they are having a hard time "finishing" that says they aren't even in the matches. I also would suggest that nothing suggests they are in fact improving. I would say it would be unfair to blame the coach solely, there are always other dynamics. She is however responsible for the product on the floor, something I am sure she would say. Also, going from what appears may be 0-30 or so, going 10-20 would be a remarkable turnaround, and that's scary to recognize.

They gain leads on teams then let them back in by making unnecessary and avoidable errors. They just need to be more consistent. I'd say they've been one of the most consistent teams in all of NCAA volleyball (along with Colorado State, Missouri, Alcorn State, UMass-Lowell, Savannah St and Portland).

With these same players in Reeds last year the team goes 27-10, wins the Big East championship and goes to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament (just missing the Sweet 16 by losing to Florida State 15-13 in 5th set in Tallahassee). I understand some drop-off to be expected with the coaching change (and Harpenau's graduation), but last year's record dropped to 12-20, 1st round loss in Big East tournament and no NCAA appearance. Now we have this years debacle. This cannot be explained away by inexperienced players.

Yes, they lost Harpenau but their setter also transferred to Texas St (no clue which, if either, coach was the cause of that transfer). They had a walkon wetting the team all season. Secondly, they won in the first round of the Big East Tournament before losing to Louisville in the semis.

Ill take your word on the correction of last years Big East tournament results; didnt mean to mislead. As with other things, the story on the setter transfer will probably vary; Id look at the timing of the transfer request to tell the story or if you have the opportunity, talk to the Mahoneys (as I have).

They had a walkon wetting the team all season. That's moistly unfortunate.

Congrats to Cincy on the win. I don't want to see anyone lose all their matches. I also can't wait for Rutgers to be in the Big Ten. Oh, yeah, yes I can.
