Don't read too much into that. Cindy also said that anything can happen from now until Friday. Also they are trying to rest Kalei Adolpho and Kalei Greeley, both rolled their ankles in practice.

Kalei Greeley is a little sore, her shoulder and of course like international ball mentioned...she rolled her ankle at practice.

In today's post from Cindy on the practice, Kalei Adolpho says she's fine and resting for an extra day for this weekend. Kalei Greeley is fine and practicing with no problem with her ankle or shoulder.

Aloha, everyone, first timer here. I've been watching Wahine volleyball religiously since the 70's and it should not be a surprise that Ginger Long might start. If Nikki Taylor was healthy she would start, I'm sure, and perhaps at Long's expense. But Ginger has paid her dues as this is her fourth year at UH, and she purportedly touches over 10' and had a quality beach season last Spring. Have we seen Ginger play indoors that much as a Wahine? Have we seen her just left in there to get the "kinks" out game after game? No--a couple of mistakes, and she's out; she makes a couple of points, game over. So we now might have the chance to see what Ginger can do all the way around the court.
On the other hand, have we seen Kalei Greeley play a collegiate game? No. But remember Lily Kahumoku's first match? She did not start the first game; if memory serves me correct she played the second game and the rest is history. When Stanford played here in 1996 during the regular (pre?) season (the same year the same two teams met for the national championship), the Wahine won the first game 15-8, but then Cardinals freshmen Keri Walsh did not play that first game. She played the next 3 and Stanford won comfortably with Walsh bombing away with precision from the back row. So the person who starts is not necessarily the one who will finish or be in there the most. It's just great for UH to have the depth to be able to consider various choices.
I'm actually excited to get to see Ginger on the court as a starter, she's an exciting player. Maybe I'm out of touch with the history of these posts, but I don't see why so many question marks and exclamation points need to be used when Long's playing potential is discussed. I don't get it. Is it Greeley's height? Greeley's three inches on Long, even on paper, does not mean a whole lot considering Long's seniority, maturity, and vertical.
I'm excited to see Greeley play, too, and we'll get to see more than enough of her during her UH career, I'm sure. But it's not as if she comes here with the reputation like Fonoimoana had when she entered USC. Well, good luck to both players, and the whole team. Can't wait for Friday; only then will we know who will actually start and finish.

welcome radman
yup, nothing is set in stone -- even if players are penciled in for the moment. it will be that kind of a season, with players competing for starting spots, and the fans taken along for the ride on the learning curve. sometimes seasons like this when there are so many questions (along with restrained hope), are just as exciting -- if not more -- than in years when there's a veteran lineup returning.
can't wait for it all to start !!

Ginger Long was error- prone last season from the service line and as an OH (during the brief time she spent at that position during actual matches,) I believe those errors are the wellspring from which criticism of Ginger Long flow. That said, I believe in Long (despite my sarcastic comments earlier in the thread.) I love to see the local girls succeed, and look forward to good things from Long this season, Olevao too for that matter.

Long's service errors from last year are the reason we are all hesitant to believe she can produce. Sarcasm is a thin veil for truth and I COMPLETELY understand such sarcasm. Cheers from my section will be just as loud.

Ginger will have her chance starting Friday to show what she can do with her much increased court time. She and Olevao have similar athleticism abilities. Both are quick, can sky and hammer the ball. In question of both will be if they can handle the backrow defense and serve/receive. In practice Ginger has shown to be the best attacker from the backrow. I recall Jim Leahey being real compassionate and egging for her to do well. The loud cheers for Ginger that you'll hear will be me, as I sit right behind Kanoe and Chris.

I think being on the sand team this past season should help Ginger's game on the indoor court. Heard she's made some strides and played well. How that transfers over to indoor we'll have to wait and see.

My boyfriend and I both agree that she was the best OH on the court that day. Less than 24 hours left before our team returns to the court. Go 'Bows.

Thank you for the welcome, Cubicle No more. I agree, seasons like the upcoming one are more exciting with new players/starters in the line up. It made me finally register for this post! I hope UH sports has a great weekend!
