I know Prietto had a pulled stomach muscle but I thought it was healed. But also realize, Elliott looooooves Amy Neil. Just read all of his press comments. Amy and Pilar light it up practice and in game time Amy produces (even if it has been against lesser competition). Read the comments from after the Nebraska game, he was basically like Haley has been struggling and we could have not gone to 5 had Haley not hit into the block. Yet praises Amy and Pilar and never mentions how Amy hit straight into the block to lose set 2 or how much the setters were trapping them with tight sets.......but yes, he is subbing out Haley to get more passing/defense which means he needs one outside to play all the way around. Every time he has Nicole go 5-1, we end up stuck with Amy and likes of Sarah in the front row and no back row attack. The 6-2 is wasted if you never set one of your middles like Sarah or Mirta b/c teams know you will go pin to pin. And it doesn't help that setting to the right pin is really inconsistent and Bell/Prieto are not able to take good swings.

In the 6-2, someone has to play all 6 rotations in order to pass on serve-receive and play in the back row since Setters/OPPs are rotating in for each other and because Eckerman is being subbed out of the back row for a DS. Amy is that all-around player at the moment. If they are in-system, Amy has shown she can beat the block and put the ball down. And even though she's a blocking liability on the left pin, she has the best floor defenders (McCoy, Dalton, Brooks) behind her to offset her blocking deficiencies. I believe that's why Dalton has been posting double-doubles... she's digging up a lot of balls behind Neal's block.
But they are also running into several problems when Amy is in the front row. If Dalton has to dig the ball up on first contact, there's only two places the ball can go: either to the right or left pin since there is no back row attack option. It's usually a high bump set, so opposing blockers have enough time to camp out on the pins. If it goes to Amy on the left pin, she can be shut down (like how Nebraska figured out towards the middle of the match). The other problem is if the ball gets dug off the net, the setters predictably go with the safe set to the left pin...again to Amy. It's only when the ball is dug 2-3 feet off the net that the setters will utilize the MB or Opp in the transition offense. But unfortunately, the back row is taught just to get the ball up instead of to target on hard-driven balls, which renders the 6-2 useless since most of the out-of-system balls go to Amy who has a harder time scoring with a well-formed block in front of her.
If they run a 5-1 and go with Eckerman and Paulina on the left pin, they will run into the problem of getting stuck with a 2-person serve-receive formation in a couple of rotations since the OHs and Opp (Bell) will be subbed out of the back row. And good serving teams will feast on that...like how Wisconsin did last year in the Final Four.
I can see advantages and disadvantages of running both systems. I just want them to stick with the one that is most efficient and where the players are most comfortable running.

Right now, Haley passes in her three rotations (though she is not covering as much court as Amy/Cat). I would assume, in a 5-1, he would sub the right side and one left side with a DS which could allow for Haley to not have to pass in all 6 rotations but you are depending on her a defender (and I personally don't think Kat Brooks is that much better of passer/defender). But with a six 6-2 he is burning the same amount of subs that he would he would DS both lefts and the right side. I do think that with a 5-1, he would need to keep the likes of Haley or Khat in the back row to have some type of back row attack.

It'd be interesting to see Bell play all 6 rotations in a 5-1 to allow her to serve, play back row defense , and to maybe let her pass in serve-receive when she is in the back row. I am also in favor of her attacking from the back row as well to add another attack option in the offense.

Went to the Point Texas Club last night to pick up my volleyball shirt I had ordered through the Longhorn Foundation. But they were sneaky and not passing out the shirts until after Elliott addressed the faithful, so I dropped in for a listen. Good stuff.
Large crowd for the 1st gathering of the season. Elliott spoke about each of the freshmen and took questions. Highlights include,
Sad news. His daughter tore her ACL. 2nd tear for her but this time the other knee.
The new practice facility will be ready in March. Will have 2 practice courts and already a big plus for recruiting. Didn't list names, but gave the number of recruits for '15, '16 & '17.
Talked about the recruiting process for Prieto back in the day and how convinced he was she would choose Texas. He was sure she was coming to Texas after she gave him a big hug at the end of her visit and was surprised when she chose Penn State. So thrilled that she fell into Texas lap late in the summer. Said she will be playing RS for ball control reasons. Very high on her.
Talked about walk on Palladino's contributions in practice and her volleyball skills. She didn't quality for admission into Texas in '13 despite her strong academic record so chose the route of attending another state institution for a year; achieved the required gpa and transferred to Texas. Elliott said she went to UTSA for the fall semester and then A&M in the spring. Said A&M offered her to play on their team, but she said "No". I don't remember her going to UTSA for a semester?
Mirta is a good blocker but needs development.
Said the lineup is pretty much set and talked about the 6-2. Said that they monitor substitutions closely and ready to switch to the 5-1 with Dalton if necessary.
Asked if Dalton is 100%. He said yes, but did not sound convincing as he talked about watching her closely, etc.
Amy Neal working very hard in practice. But she cannot be receiving the number of sets (50???) that have been coming her way for physical reasons ( I interpreted as height). Setters must get the ball to the middle and RS when Neal is on the front court.
Talked about the West Virginia match and the travel issues. After flight from Nebraska was cancelled, had to get permission from the administration to stay on the road. Players were "agitated" with each other during the 1st two sets against West Virginia and just needed to calm down, etc.
Understands that fans expect the team to be in the Final 4 or the season has not been a success. Talked about the great atmosphere at Nebraska and that we are lucky at Gregory we don't have to donate $2,500 just to qualify for purchasing court side seats at Devaney.
Agreed that McCoy is playing very well at libero, but that he had to have a "stern" talk with her at Nebraska when she deferred to Eckerman on a pass.
Said he keeps up with the alumni and makes sure to let them know about the program they have built. Allison playing in Sweden. Webster has signed a contract to play in Brazil. Can't remember where he said Paolino and Faucette are playing. Also praised Adams for making the national team.
Loves the Longhorn Network and has been lobbying them to bring Game Day show to Gregory. Game Day will be back for the Florida match. Also the LHN is working on adding an overhead camera over the court.
Elliott reminds me of Mack Brown. That's a great thing. Just needs to learn lessons from what happened to Mack and the program after the Football team lost in the National Championship game to Alabama.

Here's a list of former Longhorns playing professionally:
Bailey Webster (OPP) ---> Banana Boat/Praia Clube (BRA) Hannah Allison (S) ---> Engelholms VS (SVE) Lauren Paolini (MB) ---> Hitachi Rivale (JPN) Destinee Hooker-Coulter (OPP) ---> IBK Altos (KOR) Rachael Adams (MB) ---> Imoco Volley Conegliano (ITA) Juliann Faucette (OPP) ---> RC Cannes (FRA) Mira Topić (OH) ---> Impel Wrocław (POL)
I believe Sha'Dare McNeal is playing in the Turkish second league this season, but I can't find the team she is on.
Edit - Sha'Dare has retired professionally but is wanting to coach.
