I really think Illinois just overlooked Iowa. They were coming off a huge win and were likely looking ahead to the Nebraska match. Which hopefully means they'll come out strong on Saturday.

Errors vs Pts scored is what you look for fbjr1. 20k sounds great but when you add the errors in Birks only scored 8 pts, not good for the OH1. Hitting percentage is not a good why to determine how a player is performing, it's positive points vs errors. McMahon had 14K not bad but when you put her 12E in the mix she is scoring just as much for the opponent as she is for her team. Hard to win that why.

I agree, with you on stats not exposing the entire story. Watching the game does, then you see the passing/setting/tempo etc. But with that being said,it is the system in place. Considering the chemistry on the court I would say be happy some of them can come up with kills in spite of that. I believe she plays OH2,which (again) means shes in the front with the RS. Criswell plays the OH1 she is on the front while the setter is RS. At least that's my understanding of the difference in position. My point was not to say they played so well because they didn't,that happens, but just be glad they won and know they have the ability to play against the tougher teams.

What is everyone's opinion on Illinois using the 5-1 instead of the 6-2? I like the 5-1 better for a couple reasons. It allows that setter to attack (or dump) the ball over on the second contact. Also, it allows Illinois to use the slide attack on the right side, which is good.
I'm really looking forward to seeing next season's freshman. On a written transcript of an interview after she won the gold medal with the junior national team, Jordyn Poulter says that she has "Olympic aspirations". I'm sure that most players would like to go their too, but I think that she actually has a good chance to get to that level. That being said, how will Illinois handle having 4 setters next year? Switch 1 or 2 of them to DS?
On to today, IF Illinois wins (a rather large IF), they will have won at Penn State and at Nebraska in the same season. Not many teams have done that. In fact, who was the last team to do that? Stanford beat both teams this year, but the PSU match was at home for them.

What is the general opinion on what will happen when Poulter arrives? She's not the kind of setter to sit and watch, she's a special talent.
Has this conversation already happened somewhere, maybe earlier in this thread?

Best out of system control and scoring they have played all year. Someone get Birks and Criswell some ice for their shoulders, both took a lot of swings. Congrats on the first win vs. Nebraska in 20 plus years. Good all around play.

Stanford beat both teams this year, but the PSU match was at home for them. As far I can tell, Illinois is only the third visiting team to win at both Penn State and Nebraska in the same year.
Ohio State did it in 1991, winning at PSU in the regular season and at Nebraska in the Regional Final.
Purdue did it in consecutive weekends in 1982, winning first at Nebraska, and then winning twice in the same day at PSU a week later by scores of 2-0 and 3-1. (PSU played 4 home matches that day as part of a tournament, with only the final one against Purdue being best-of-five.)
Of course, it's also unprecedented for Nebraska to have 5 home losses in the same year. That's partly due to the fact that they've hosted three of the four remaining unbeaten teams (Stanford, Texas, FSU), but so far they just don't seem to have quite the same caliber of team we're used to seeing from the Huskers.
In any case, OSU will also have a chance to pull off the same feat again when they travel to Happy Valley on Halloween...

I figured Illinois early on as a top 3 team in the Big Ten. They are clearly getting better play at the setter and libero positions this year, Birks is a top left side, Liz McMahon is a solid right side (despite having vertical leap of 3, maybe 4 inches) and you can't argue with Hambly's coaching ability. Will be very, very interested to watch this team play Purdue and Wisconsin.
