Interesting move for Erin Juley to transfer to a school with one of the top setters in the country who is coming off a year where she took her team to the national championship. On one level yes. But sometimes when a kid isn't in a great situation, they want to be somewhere they feel stable, where they love the environment and school. That often times has more appeal than playing time. I believe her dad went there, her sister is going there, and that is where she wanted to go. Great get for Wisconsin she will at minimum make them way better in practice.

I never meant to say that she made a bad choice. I apologize to everyone if I made it seem that way. I was merely confused. College now a days is expensive. She's most like a walk on, leaving a scholarship. I guess coming from someone who wishes they had a scholarship, I was simply confused on why she would trasnger. But I've said before, I don't know her situtation and it could of been personal reasons. Regardless best of luck to her and I hope she can recover from Injuries.

Updates from Sheffield's interview:
More of the same regarding spring v. fall season. Spring is about the individual, getting better, expanding roles, stepping up in the leadership department, whereas fall is about taking the individuals developed in the spring and molding them into a team, individuals sacrificing for the team, etc. The players struggled at the beginning of the spring season because they thought it should feel like December, gel like December, and they were frustrated that things weren't clicking.
Teri Barr (the host) asked if Sheffield is having trouble motivating his players - are they inclined to rest on their laurels? Sheff laughed and replied that he has the ultimate motivator: the bench. He said that he hasn't had to use it much, though, because the team isn't satisfied with last season. They know they left some points, sets, and matches on the table, and they want to do better.
He also commented that last year we had pretty much no depth, and that with the newcomers who'll be arriving in the fall and the players who are coming out of redshirts and recovering from injuries, some of the players who were indispensable last year know that they'll be fighting for their lives in the fall.
Sheffield compared this spring to last spring. He said that last spring, Annemarie really grew into her leadership role by demonstrating to the others the level of work it takes to get better. He said that last year, she was in the gym every day, doing individual reps, and she was the only one doing that. Some players would come in here and there, but Anne was there every day, and her dedication and growth really set the standard for the team. This spring, to contrast, he said that there are about eight players who are training individually every day, and that right now those players are voluntarily doing two-a-days, coming in every afternoon or evening after their morning practices.
The team has elected their 2014 captains, and there are four of them: Thomas, Kvas, Morey, and Carlini. He acknowledged that four is "kind of a lot," but it's what the team feels they need, so that's what they're going to do.
When asked about Rutgers and Maryland, he said that for volleyball, it's a big step up from their respective conferences to B1G volleyball. He said that he thinks they're already making some moves to step up their game, especially Maryland with the hiring of Aird. He acknowledges that it will probably be a rocky start for them, but he hopes that their administrations step up the support and give the programs what they need to compete in the B1G. After saying all that, he chuckled and asked, "Is that politically correct enough?"
When asked about recruiting and whether being national runner up put Wisconsin on more kids' radar, he said that he wasn't sure because he didn't have a basis for comparison, but that we'd gotten lots of interest and several good commitments (4/5 of the 2015s) prior to the team's tournament run. So while going to the national championships in no way hurt the effort, he said that the recruiting pitch hasn't really changed: You can come to Wisconsin and lead, or go elsewhere and follow. You can come in and help us build a tradition of greatness. It's about attracting players who buy into the vision for the program. And we've gotten some quality commitments since then (he alluded to Hilley, saying "one of them's a freshman").
When asked about the conference opener against Penn State: Sheffield said that the team is fired up about it, and the fans are fired up about it, and he's excited to pack the Field House, but that he's trying to impress upon the team is that he cares more about what they do over 3 months than what they do over 3 hours. What makes Penn State Penn State is their ability to win consistently over time, not just to have a big win here and there. We're trying to build greatness, here.

Sheff's recent comments about Big Ten opponents could probably be a little more politically correct.

Sheff's recent comments about Big Ten opponents could probably be a little more politically correct. Are you reverting to this interview, or elsewhere?

I know I am really excited for the upcoming season, and getting additions that look like they will be helpful at this point is just an added bonus. I hope everyone can get and stay healthy, as it could be very interesting to see how the competitions shake out. I also hope they can have good health and a lot of depth so they can go full bore in practice, which didn't seem to be the case last year from what I read. They improved a lot anyway, but maybe they could make even more strides being able to take more reps.

Juley could give them some depth if Carlini traipses off to the national team in the next couple of years; I think potential schedules conflict in August/September.

So I saw Teri Barr MC the halftime contests etc at the women's games this year. Aside from the voice, she in no way looks like the Teri Barr from TV from 3-4 years ago.
Thanks for great recap, RB. I was hoping he would tell us when they are going to raise the National Finalist banner. I assume for the PSU match, which will fire them up. I noticed for the spring matches the 2000 banner was missing. I assume they were using it to copy for a new one. Also, the last NCAA participation banner is full, so they will need a new banner to start the 2013 and future trips. It's nice having lots of banners in the fieldhouse finally!

It's nice having lots of banners in the fieldhouse finally! And they won't have to do like they are doing in the Kohl Center with taking down the banners and putting the ring around the upper level and chaning them between hockey and basketball.

When does this fall's schedule get released? They kept saying "end of April" at the post-match Q&A. I hope they get on it, because we're running out of April.

Who listens to a radio interview of a VB coach in the middle of April, and then posts the interview in verbatim on Volleytalk? Talk about being invested... I am invested. Besides, Gobucky appreciates my recaps. :-)
