This guy is a good coach. And to think I only knew him from back when he was selling videos endorsed by Fred McGriff that taught youth baseball drills.

How about those Hawks dropping only one set in Brookings? It should be a good confidence builder going into the tough part of the schedule. Even tougher considering this year they open Big Ten play against Nebraska back-to-back and they'll face Indiana and Rutgers only once. Agree, Mocha! Even though all four of these were "should beat" teams, they did so pretty convincingly. Not without some lapses in focus at times but definitely much more consistent performance this year thus far. To be 8-2, losing only to two very solid teams (ASU and T A&M), starting four new players (3 of whom are Frosh) AND doing all of this on the road...we'll take it! Early observations: Iowa definitely has more offensive weapons than in the past, is blocking much better and is closing out sets and matches that used to slip away. Janota is emerging as a true standout on the right already. Will be so interesting to see how things go in Ames this Saturday and then, yes, starting out with back-to-back Nebraska games: yikes! B1G season will be the true test. Vid of Shymansky's take on things after the SDSU tournament in the link below: www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/w-volley/recaps/091314aae.html

He won back to back to back AAU national championships. I remembered watching his teams pass balls into buckets from center field. It was weird, but it worked.

Hawks are now 8-2. This time last year Iowa had a similar record (9-2) but had tighter wins and this year's team has yet to play at home. The real test begins now.

Thoughts? 0-6 start to conference play, 0-18 sets.
Are they looking better than last year, despite the record? Injuries?

It takes many years to bring in the players to compete in the top conferences. Coaching alone can not do it at that level. Most people who understand high level sports know that.

I dunno. I expected them to be more competitive -- and they may end up being that.

I can tell you players love playing under the new coaches. There's certainly more optimism now than a year ago.

Clearly not the same situation. The players were there. Coach Waite would have had a very similar year had he stayed. He brought all those players in. Also, injuries have a lot to say about things as well.

I do believe that college volleyball is a lot like college basketball. Due to the small number of players on the court playing, if a coach can corral two very high level recruits in one recruiting year, a program can become immediately competitive. The challenge lies in convincing those top level recruits to give Shymansky and the UI their volleyball futures.

Wasn't Wisconsin in the woods for a number of years before the rebirth? Yes, but there were these occasional flashes of brilliance that were enough to convince me that we had the personnel to win in almost any circumstance. It wasn't a recruiting problem. Pete could shop just fine. It was once he got into the kitchen that things failed to pan out.

I hope when Iowa comes to Madison that Jackie Simpson gets a shoutout much like Jake Barreau did for the Missouri State matchup.
And she gets to see the new display with her picture.
I have been surprised that Iowa State is not up to its usual (as in the last 7 years) high standards (although UNI is undefeated in the MVC they are not ranked). Maybe the Iowa high school pickin's are slimmer this year? And I think the #1 Iowan (Morgan) is going to Wisconsin.
