I'd love to see VB standings like this, i.e. lower-end teams around .333, upper-end teams around .667, with anyone having a reasonable shot at beating anyone else. Although for basketball this resulted in only 6 making the NCAAs, plus Minny winning the NIT.
2014 Men's Basketball Standings Michigan^ 15-3 .833 28-9 .757 Wisconsin 12-6 .667 30-7 .811 Michigan State# 12-6 .667 29-9 .763 Nebraska 11-7 .611 19-13 .594 Ohio State 10-8 .556 25-10 .714 Iowa 9-9 .500 20-13 .606 Minnesota 8-10 .444 25-13 .658 Illinois 7-11 .389 20-15 .571 Indiana 7-11 .389 17-15 .531 Penn State 6-12 .333 16-18 .471 Northwestern 6-12 .333 14-19 .424 Purdue 5-13 .278 15-17 .469 Standings current through Thursday, April 3

Have I mentioned that I don't like this hire? I like Iowa being Iowa, and I think this will screw that up. It is a big mountain to climb, but I think they will definitely improve.

According to RickKern.com, Iowa has added Sandra Mohr, 6'4" MB from Milwaukee area for class of 2016. 1st recruit for that class. Looks like Shymansky is definitely bringing in some talented players with height, which has been sorely lacking in IC for awhile.

I'd be curious to know what the prepvb rankings are of Iowa recruits. I'm not saying that prepvb is the final word on who will be good, but it's a start and at least some way of comparing the new recruits with those of the last few classes at Iowa. I guess I'm really asking whether there is reason to think that the new recruits will be markedly better than their predecessors, or whether this is a case where there is so much enthusiasm about the new coach that people are ready to applaud whatever he does and gush about whoever he brings in.

Have you seen gushing about Iowa recruits on here? It seems more like interest in the new commits and looking at how they might contribute to the team.

Taylin Alm was on the Sr Aces 101-250 list. As a 6'4" Middle/RS she has a lot of upside. She didn't have the young high level training that many top players had, just the last three years has she gotten into National/Regional level club ball.
I think Bond's best chance until he gets out of the bottom of the B1G is to take players that are perhaps underrated or a little raw and try to turn them into the players that the top recruits already are.
But Sandra Mohr was on the Soph. 79 list and is also 6'4", so I think that's a get. Strong Recruits for a program that's been at the bottom of their conference for many years

Gushing might be too strong a term, but, yes, that's my general impression. But, look, I have no ax to grind here. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone. I'm just observing what I think is a common phenomenon. Team not doing well. Team hires new coach, who has had a record of success elsewhere. Fans cheer the decision. Fans are excited. There's a honeymoon period, part of which is everything the coach does is seen as a step in the right direction, an improvement over what was. I'm just asking how the new recruits stack up with the typical Iowa class of the last few years (which had some good players, too), as measured by the prepvb rankings. I have no idea what the result of such a comparison would be. I'm not saying that it would show that the players that Shymansky has inveigled into the fold aren't really "all that." Truly, I have no idea.

Since I put the original post out there, I will say the intent of my post was more around the apparent (and needed) focus on bringing in taller players to Iowa, which has been needed. Was more of an observation around that than anything else. I would agree that "gushing" is too strong of a term, at least from my perspective, but some good questions and observations around what can happen when a new coach takes over a struggling program. As to the quality, thanks brickwall for the info. Both Alm and Fugarino coming in 2014 were in Sr Aces 101-250 and although not in "The 100," getting two on that list so late in the recruiting process is commendable.

IA loss 15-25, 16-25 vs MN at the UNI tourney. Passing needs some work. Middles are a little slow, one looks like Sandra Bullock. Anyway, I don't know any of the IA players, but I think the lefty opposite (#3?) is their best offensive weapon.

Hard to judge till they get this years recruits in. They need a ton if work yet, for sure. Hard to be a fan of Iowa volleyball, so hoping for the best this fall.
