Man you all are cynical. What I heard on the broadcast was that the entire US team (both genders, all players) offered to travel back with her, not just Walsh. I thought that was an amazing display of compassion, not a PR stunt. Maybe I am naive to believe it, but you constantly hear stories about how close the volleyball community is and I chose to believe this was another example of that. So a team that gets 15 chances a year to make money is going to give one up to fly home with someone who they aren't that close with? (assuming Summer is not BFFs with every single player) Would you do that for your 10th best friend for example? (meaning give up 10% of your annual income) If teams were willing to do that then its dumb and unprofessional, but either way, anybody but Summer putting it out there is self-serving Man, but you're a Grinch. Compassion does not equal dumb and unprofessional. And all of these players train together frequently, eat together, travel together, for weeks on end. They get close. And in some ways, Summer is kind of a mascot. But yeah, there was no reason to publicize it.

There's no reason not to publicize it either. I'm not saying send out a press release but assuming a reporter asked a question about the reaction of the group upon hearing the news, there is nothing wrong with the truth. There is a difference between seeking attention and answering questions honestly and letting reporters do what they do.
I don't know which way it happened; but probably no one on the board knows either.

Someone offers to support a U.S. teammate who just lost their mom and you think that's "unprofessional"? I doubt if they would care what you think....but perhaps, like April, they know the horror of losing a parent. Some of you have a problem with Wong/Marlow sharing this story during the broadcast, but you have no problem with Rogers/Brunner forfeiting a match in the last tournament for a competitive advantage...pathetic.

And in some ways, Summer is kind of a mascot. But yeah, there was no reason to publicize it. I concede to being a grinch, but as to unprofessional, imagine a group of male athletes in a major sport doing that Oh wait, you can't because it would never happen. Can you imagine the Atlanta Hawks skipping a playoff game because of a similar situation with Paul Millsapp? The Redskins conceding defeat to the Cowboys for a like reason? If one of the girls is particularly close with Summer, bridesmaid in her wedding close, then maybe its the right thing to do, but otherwise it bespeaks a lack of commitment and single-mindedness, which in my mind is unprofessional. Horrible comparisons here. Perhaps the players in these other billion dollar heavyweight sports are much more greedy and less self-sacrificing to do this. Or simply the environment and make-up of those leagues being so big with so many players on one team would not allow for something like this to happen. Beach volley is so piddly and allows for something rare like this incident to be pulled off. Kerri being the best example...you really think her missing a few matches is going to make or break her year??? On the opposite side of that the beach players making so little money I think would be willing to sacrifice a few matches/$$ in order to help someone else...a few more thousand bucks might pay some of the bills but none of them are going to be significantly effected the rest of their lives if they were to miss a match or two. Maybe I'm not making the best examples here but you're comparing apples to oranges in this case in my opinion. The fact that you are trying to claim this would be an "unprofessional" action, again, to me doesn't hold water.
