Hooker is 6'4", a NCAA finalist, at least, level high jumper, and yet is not known as a great blocker, nor statistically is. To me she is inconsistent blocking. When she gets the rhythmn of the game and opposing offense, she is a monster at the net. Need to get everything together. I still wish they would give Murphy a shot at passing and it it works, put Hooker in at OH, Murphy at OPP. What a team. Fawcett did well in the three sets she played. USA can use her serve, more so than Lichtman's if you're just going to be a serving sub. I know pelcj and others say the US system doesn't have OPP as serving subs, but a) why not and b) not a great adjustment to make. 1. I have no idea why you're bringing up Hooker's high jumping accolades in a discussion about her blocking. No idea. They couldn't be more unrelated. And, the Hooker/Akinradewo block was, arguably, one of Team USA's biggest weapons in the last quad. I think Hooker was a fantastic blocker by 2012. 2. Murphy passing? You're suggesting they teach Murphy a skill she's never had to execute before now, at this point in her career, at the highest international level, so we can possibly move an athlete that isn't even in the gym to the left? Not your best idea. 3. Fawcett made too many errors on Saturday. I wouldn't trust her to come in cold once per set and crush her serve repeatedly. If Karch is taking a second OPP anywhere, it's to run the double sub, not to serve for one of the middles. 1. Gee, I thought high jumpers jump high, and if you jump high you can get your arms over the net, cut off the angle, etc. Generally few praise Hookers blocking on this board; I think it's great. 2. Of course Murphy hasn't repped returning serve for years, but were you at SPVB practices? Just dreaming about getting the best USA players together on the court. Not happening, of course. 3. USA has to have a second OPP, sure it's up in the air. Fawcett ended up hitting about .143 and had 3 blocks, or one a set, so mixed results.

And, Destinee's 40+ inch vertical is pretty sufficient to hit the bic in the women's game, regardless of what you think. Apprently, it must be all that and a bag a chips. So amazing that Hooker would come flying out of the right back position in Zone 1 and hit a bic right over the top of the quick attack in Zones 5/6. I wanna see video on that.

Out of curiosity then, ncaavballguru, what would you label that set that Murphy (for example) hits out of the back middle in system? A pipe? A letter set (B, C, etc)?
Been a long time since I heard someone use the term "playset." Ah, memories.

For the record, women hit "mediums" and, oh I dunno, what would be a bigger slower version of a bic? If it's a bic lighter, than maybe the women run one of those longer lighters you use to fire up the BBQ?

For simplicity, A-Pipe-D out of the backrow.

With Hill, Robinson and Richards , Klineman won't get time OH2. We will know soon if Klineman joins the team for GP trip. Klineman is still very young

Back-ups? Our roster was the very best roster we could've had. Everyone who played in this series has a legitimate opportunity to start for Team USA this year and is battling to do so. We started Glass in 3/4 matches and played in every set in the fourth, Larson would've started in 3/4, Akinradewo 2/4, Murphy 2/4 and finished the fourth, Davis 2/4, Robinson 3/4... Who weren't we starting that we should have been? Again, there is no reason Brazil should've lost these matches, unless you're telling me that we are just that much better than Brazil now (with our rookie L1) than we were a year ago. A team starting five Olympians (six when they started Natalia) had no business losing to a bunch of "back-ups," as you call them. Dude - are you reading your own posts? Akinradewo 2/4; Larson 3/4 (which, of course, you don't actually know), Murphy 2/4. Are you telling me that Karch doesn't know that those are his best options at those positions? If we are soooo desperate to win at all costs, explain to me why those are not all uniformly 4/4? Fawcett, Hildebrand, Adams-Dixon-Gibbemeyer (2 of the 3 anyway) are all backups. He's experimenting with the line-up (appropriately) and evaluating players (appropriately) -- not going for the jugular. Brazil's lineup is actually much more consistent across matches. Now, as for the second part -- what was with Brazil? I agree with you there. I don't believe that that was the best they are capable of. But I'm not sure it isn't the best that they are capable of RIGHT NOW. They are clearly looking for someone to replace Sheila, and their best OH alternative besides Fe Garay hasn't really emerged yet. Monique? Gabi? Natalia? I think they are sorting through that, and not playing their best. They definitely have more experienced talent than we do. I don't think it's accurate or fair, though, to say that they "weren't trying." That doesn't pass the eyeball test. I just want to add that just because he played "backups," doesn't mean these players are horrible, losing players by any means. Fawcett holds the world record for the most points in a single match. Hildebrand was named as one of the best OHs in the Brazilian Superliga this past season. There is a chance that one of the 3 MBs you mentioned will be starting and also a chance 2 of them will go to Rio. The depth of the USA bench is crazy. Also, NONE of us are in the USA gym. He might be seeing exactly what he wants from Fawcett and co. There is definitely a possibility that Karch thought he could win with any of the lineups he presented. ALSO, the only sure bet starters (IMO) are Larson and Foluke, so how exactly can you call all of these other players backups when we don't really know who the other 4 starters will be? I have no idea what Karch's mindset was going into these matches, but I doubt it was, "well, let's play these players even though I know they'll never start and that they'll probably lose."

Watching the actions of Fawcett in the two matches, it does not seem like she is at comfortable trying to attack down the line from the rightside position. Obviously, I don't know what she shows in the gym and on the practice court, but from viewing her this weekend and in the past, it seems like much about her game (specifically the attacking) has stayed the same and not progressed.

I understand how radical this notion is vis a vis Muserskiy but considering how well Thaisa hits the bic now, I hope Ze's secretly training her for opposite and switch her there in Rio, and only in Rio, if they get in trouble during elimination and/or against USA for Gold. Adenizia's strong enough to be MB2 and doesn't really matter if Thaisa's crushing everything from the right. Thaisa has never hit a bic in her life. WOW. Not only are you in every USA National Team practice, huddle and meeting, you also apparently attend every Brazil national team practice and match.

No one gives a f*ck about men's volleyball. We are talking about defining these sets with respect to elite women's volleyball. They hit quicks. They hit bics. Are they the exact same set that the men run? No, BECAUSE THEY AREN'T MEN. Just because women can't hit the 3-meter line out of the backrow like Sander can doesn't require a "slam" from you. Two completely different games that you endlessly try to compare. And, Destinee's 40+ inch vertical is pretty sufficient to hit the bic in the women's game, regardless of what you think. Destinee Hooker does not have a 40-inch vertical.
You are such a fanboy. You secretly want to put on spandex and jump on the court on the opposite side of the net just to get hit in the face by a "30" from Robinson.
I know you think you're cool referring to it as a "30" all the time. It's just a plain old "A" set to the rest of us real volleyballers. But hey, if you wanna act in-the-know or whatever, feel free to do so.
Now that's a visual I can live without.

So far we've learned you haven't kept up with USA's men's team during this WL nor watched any Superliga matches with Osasco last season. Less posting more learning!
