I distinctly remember a thread involving PSU fans claiming that either Rose said, or they thought (some combination of that), that Prieto and Whitney were the best OH's in the gym...Foot => Mouth I think the term was best hitter in the gym and it was only related to Whitney and the time frame was spring and summer of last year. I never remember Prieto being mentioned in that line of thought. There were a few posters writing that both Whitney and Prieto were the best hitters in their gym. Too many fans lean on high school and club hype and don't understand that sometimes kids don't translate their skills that well. There were also posters last year that were saying Elise Ruddins had a better all-around game and more potential than Kadie Rolfzen. Both are still young in their careers, but it's another example of fans getting carried away before these players ever make a meaningful contribution at the college level. You'll see the same thing with PSU's new class. A couple of those players will no doubt be great, but a few will be busts, it's just the reality of recruiting.

She was a redshirt freshman last year; so it's too soon to label her anything. I would bet that had Prieto the only one in her recruiting class, she would be playing a lot than she has so far. It's just that... Courtney's game is pretty good, and Deja was not going be supplanted (due to her improvement). So Prieto has to wait for her turn. But she probably saw the incoming freshmen and thought to pull it sooner rather than later. But this is only a guess.

Yeah, there were some posters stating that despite redshirting in 2012, Prieto and Whitney were going to be starters (at OH, I believe) in 2013 as they were the most talented. I recall stating that there was no way Courtney and McClendon, with their experience and all-around skills as 6-rotation pin hitters, were going to be displaced unless they struggled mightily.

I wouldn't call her a bust either, but there were PSU fans thinking she was going to come in and start from day 1. It's like people forget that the veterans at these schools were also top-ranked players coming in. Too many fans are enamored with the new kid on the block and don't understand that it takes a special player to dominate immediately, especially at a school like PSU which is stacked with talent.

Touche' She did have all those aspects as a hitter. Just wasn't consistent enough I guess. Potential unrealized. And of course was this quote of mine in the context of this year, last year , when A. Scott was hurt spring summer and preseason? Of course things change. Prior to her leaving it was pretty clear where I had her on the depth chart, so you may want to check. It wasn't in a starting spot.

Although, in true Vtalk style, an observation has turned into a rumor, finally an assumption, about Prieto transferring, I will join in with the flippant observation that she could transfer to Hawaii, fill an immediate need, and spend two years on the beach, great weather, in front of great crowds. I seriously don't understand why that isn't really an option for outstanding players looking to transfer. No island sickness for four years, with only a two year commitment; what a collegiate experience. But of course much further away from home. Hawaii is one of the few "top" schools to have a scholarship to give, Minny the other, and maybe Oregon.

Several things strike me here: 1) good research skills by ay2013; 2) good "touché" by akbar; 3) good point about context (also by akbar); and finally 4) if ay2013's point is that some PSU fans were guilty of "irrational exuberance" (in case I ever run for U.S. Senate, this is not my phrase, it's Alan Greenspan's) -- yes, and they/we undoubtedly will be again (though the jury is still out on both Prieto Cerame and Whitney -- we really don't know how they will perform this year and next). As are the fans of pretty much every team. That's hardly breaking news. Is there some other deep point from ay2013 that I'm missing?

I would say it would almost be impossible for PSU fans to have "irrational" exuberance about their program and players. Obnoxious or tiresome? Maybe. But irrational? No.

No. This will drive some people crazy. Perhaps irrationally so. I am obviously a huge PSU fan but not someone who goes overboard about their success. In this its really simply a matter of fact. You just couldn't say a PSU fan "irrationally" exuberant. Unless he is saying this about players that haven't performed yet, and then he of course would be somewhat accurate.

No. Actually, in its proper context, the phrase "irrational exuberance" may be an apt description for the situation that Penn St is in. The phrase was originally used to suggest that continued growth at the existing rate was likely unsustainable, and that current valuation was inflated by the irrational exuberance that the status quo would continue indefinitely.

Rose himself did say that, in 2012, the year that Whitney was ineligible and Prieto was recovering from her injury, that two of his three best attackers were on the bench.
