Doesn't surprise me that much. Illinois finds out what its like to play on the road away from their tremendous home court advantage and tables are turned. Nice voctory for the Ramblers in a crazy year.

Can't say that's really a surprise. Coming off such an emotional high, they were bound to have a let down.

... Plus the loss to Illinois helps USC in the long run. The pressure of their undefeated streak is dealt with relatively early in the season. Don't have to worry about carrying the streak into a tough conference schedule or even into the post-season (again).
Wasted opportunity here for Illinois to show their win wasn't a fluke...

This is not something I want to hear about when UCSB is in the process of playing Cal Poly. They always seem to play at a different level when we are the opponent.

Hmmmm. Seems to me someone was complaining about all the Illini bashing... Yup. Show yourselves Illini backers. Hello Top 10, goodbye top 10. Don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out. Loyola edges Illinois in five games Belter, Virsilaite pace Illinois with 17 and 16 kills, respectively Sept. 14, 2004 Chicago, Ill. - How much does the home court matter? Saturday night in front of a big crowd at Huff Hall, Illinois downed the number one ranked team in nation, USC in a thrilling five-game match. Three days later, it was Illinois' turn to go into a hostile environment against a team hoping to pull the upset. Unranked Loyola was up to the task, defeating No. 9 Illinois in five games, 30-25, 30-24, 26-30, 28-30, 15-13 at Alumni Gymnasium in Chicago. Senior Jessica Belter led Illinois with 17 kills followed by Rasa Virsilaite's career-high 16 kills. Meghan Macdonald and Rachel VanMeter followed with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Illinois falls for the first time this season and now stands 5-1 on the season. The Illini never could get in a rhythm in the first two games and Loyola's hitters began to swing away. The Ramblers hit .426 and made just two hitting errors in game two. The Illini meanwhile weren't sharp, committing a combined 14 hitting errors in the first two games, including hitting a .045 in game one. The first game was close with neither team leading by more than a point until Loyola took a 19-15 lead. Illinois came back to tie at 22-22, but after the match was tied at 24-24, Loyola scored six of the last seven points of the game. Loyola controlled the second game, taking leads of 19-15, 25-18 and 28-20 before winning 30-24. The Illini showed some spark in the third game, hitting .412 for the game. Virsilaite had six of her kills in the third game on six swings for a 1.000 hitting percentage. Vicki Brown had four kills in six swings in the game. The Illinois lead eventually reached 20-10 and 29-22 before the Illini won 30-26. The Illini defense returned to form in games three and four allowing Loyola to hit .088 and .026, respectively. Jessica Belter and Meghan Macdonald carried the attack in game four as Illinois rallied back from a 20-18 deficit to take a 27-24 lead and hold on for a 30-28 victory. Kathleen Bazzetta served three key points including an ace as Illinois pulled in front. The fifth game was hard fought. Illinois tied the score at 9-9 with three straight points, but never had a lead as Loyola wrapped up the win 15-13. The victory for Loyola (5-3) was the third in a row for the Ramblers in Chicago over Illinois. The Illini travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to participate in the C&C Services Invitational Sept. 17-18 with matches against Houston, Ball State, and the Arkansas.

Loyola is now 2-0 in the Big Ten, having also beaten Northwestern. I did notice that Hynds, I think, didn't play for the Illini. Is she hurt? Definitely a setback for Illinois; the top ten ranking is going to be gone. I still have questions about how good the Illini are; the USC win was pretty shocking to me.

I'm sure nobody expected the Illini to go undefeated the rest of the year, but to lose so soon? What chokers. They remind me of other historic giant killers. They do well in one game by beating a top team and then they go and have a mediocre season. Consistency. consistency.

Hynds rolled her ankle and was unable to compete. After going the first two games with Griffin in the middle and losing, Hardin moved VanMeter to middle. She looked lost at this position. Rachel struggled closing blocks and was never able to find a rythym in her attack. For most of the match they passed with only two players. And Belter's enitre hitting hand was taped, so much that she could not move her fingers. They just never had the intensity or urgency to win.
On the flip side LU played sparkling defense. Holbrook and Deelo made magnifecent digs. And Holbrook set a great match. She kept the illini guessing, and she herself was a potent offensive threat.
It was a very entertaing match at least. Two of the better setters in the midwest just willing there respective teams on. Just on this night Virtue did not get the same kind of support, Holbrook did.

So USC is again #1, right? ;D I would think the opposite. To lose to a team who turns around and loses to an unranked team? Makes USC look worse, not better.

And Belter's enitre hitting hand was taped, so much that she could not move her fingers. I seem to recall her hand being all taped up Saturday against USC, too. Didn't seem to hurt the team too much.
