Japan is playing better and getting a boost playing at home. Russia is not playing well at all apart from Kosheleva and Malykh hiting, and is beatable if one of them is slightly off.
Also, Russia and Turkey played matches on Sunday night in Kaliningrad, spent a day travelling (16? 18? hour flight + losing 6-7 hours to time zones) and then had to play Wednesday afternoon in Japan. That's a rough turnaround, which makes what Turkey did to Brazil even more impressive. Not surprised by them having a let down the next day.

Japan served lights out and I think Kano's still the best libero in the world, she passed dimes other liberos get aced on.

I have not watched any of the final round games. Can anyone comment on how Japan is playing? Is the team playing exponentially better or just playing against teams in their bad days (e.g teams making unforced errors)? Just very surprised to see Japan beat both Russia and turkey -2 teams they lost to earlier. Might be a little bit of both. Japan vs Turkey was really fun to watch. Japan was digging absolute bullets. Godze looked really frustrated. Turkey's passing really broke down. Their setter didn't have her best day. Japan looks good but I don't see them beating Brazil. Belgium seems like the freebie win if China could beat them resting their top two players. I think Russia could still win - obviously depending on their upcoming matches. I'm not sure if I see Brazil dominating after this quad, but I haven't seen if they have any young talent that hasn't played in the WGP. I don't see Gabi and Tandara being better than Sheilla, Pequeno, or Jaque. I'm actually curious to see if Brazil can maintain their level of play into Rio. A lot of their players are at about that age when female players start declining.

Did you guys notice when Japan's setter (Haruka) rotates to the front, she blocks middle? Japan also has a lineup with just three outside hitters and no middle.
AMAZING and fun to watch.

That's because hitters like Saori can dig up cross court rockets all day long.

Russia vs Turkey-- an absolute slug-fest going on. Russia up 1-0, turkey leads 12-10 in the second.

hawkeye replay is not saying what the ref wants it to say .. until the 3rd try - bring in the polish replay people who know how to do it right (looked like a back row attack to me in the fuzzy vid closeup but i would agree with an NFL sensibility that whatever the ref ruled, there was not clear evidence to overturn it)
bra-bel not likely to be interesting other than who will play for bra.. so guess i'll watch some defense winning a match with http://universalsports.com/video/2014-fivb-volleyball-world-grand-prix-tokyo-japan-japan-vs-turkey/

The Egyptian up ref over-ruled the hawkeye/replay decision which had gone in favor of Turkey and awarded the point to Russia--but I think he was actually right. The question is why is the replay set-up so bad in the final round in Japan. Don't they make that stuff?

i thought i heard that poland created/started the replay system used in world league - hawkeye is the name used in tennis so i wonder if it's the same company trying to get into vb - no idea where its from - but rather poor system by comparison.

It looked like the tip of the shoe was over the line but the sole of the shoe never actually touched the line. This happened once on a video challenge in the world league when the video was high quality and easily discernible. The call was no fault and I think the same should've applied to Sonsirma's back row attack. Shame the ref didn't go with the video technician's first ruling.

Japan has very good outsides and rather weak middles. It's a very smart move of adjusting the system to the personnel.

China without Zhu Ting is not incredibly threatening...Lang Ping is definitely looking ahead to the World Championships

The down ref is the one who walks over to the replay station and decides. He was from Japan, and he was over-ruled by the up ref. It was a tough call to see. The replay camera angles were so much better at some of the other venues.

The replay camera angles were so much better at some of the other venues. I found it interesting that they came back with video clip captioned 'no fault' 3 or 4 times and then finally they came back with 'line violation' because the refs couldn't agree. If the head referee is going to overrule video replay he should at least have to go over to the small monitor so he can get the very best view possible. I do not understand how the ruling can be made in Turkeys favor initially and then Russia can argue and have it repeatedly reviewed over and over. It seems like one challenge should be in place and once the review is completed that's the end of it. Watching the players, coaches, fans stand there while the Official went back and forth repeatedly ruling then re-ruling was ridiculous.
