Magill! Woo hoo!
Just the fact that they are getting the offensive production from that position is awesome! No offense to Voerster because I was and still am a fan of hers.

Nice win! Not the best match for an opening season but we'll take it. First game jitters and playing with new players. I'm sure a lot of tweaking to work out. Nice effort by Ginger and Tai. They have improved and hopefully will continue to get better along with everyone else.
Go Bows!

wtg bows. haven't been able to watch too many matches of Na Wahine the past few years. Have Long and Olevao improved significantly or were the starters from the previous seasons so much better than before? Very impressive with the 3m attacks that we had

Here's just a little recap of how players did tonight
Setter - Higgins: She started the match off really shaky but progressed as the match went on. She is a really smart setter and has great potential. Her connection with Magill improved and her serve and defense are good. - Koelsch: Only came in the front row for one set. She sets a great ball to the outside and posts a big block. Looking forward to see her come in more.
Middle - Adolpho: She showed her leadership tonight, the more dominant presence on the court. Her slide was very effective tonight and she has a great connection with Higgins. Her blocking was great as well. - Magill: Slow start as she progressed her connection with Higgins. We now know she can hit the ball straight down and we see her athleticism with her speed and jumping abilities. I was hoping to see more blocks from her but it was only the first game.
Outside - Manu-Olevau: Its safe to say that she has improved. More consistent and taking better swings. Hit around .300 and played well all the way around. In her interview she sounds like she doesn't want to be the sole points leader and needs everyone's help. - Long: She took a lot of swings tonight but she did hit under .100 and I still applaud her for her good all around skills. Nice to see her finally getting time to show it. - Passi: She struggled tonight, her connections with Higgins weren't there. Not sure if this is a sign that she isn't ready or if she was having an off night. Hopefully she gets her focus back or maybe we can see an appearance from Huff - Greeley: She didn't necessarily have any big plays but she came in as great off the bench sub. Can't wait to see more of her.
Libero/DS - Mendoza: She really surprised with 24 digs in a three set match. Her speed, reflexes, and ability to read the ball has all improved since last season. She was a last minute change to libero and she really earned this spot. - Kahakai: Doesn't play like a freshman, really good and great to have with Mendoza. I can see why her and Mendoza were close in competition for the libero spot. She had 8 digs and 2 aces which was great for her first match. - Anderson: Played in her first college game and she has a nice serve. The ball went to her around three times and the first one she got caught off guard and the other two she dug well. She has more of an upside that I thought.

Tai and Ginger showed their improvement. Kahakai is amazing. Mendoza performed beautifully. Higgins was solid. Passi seemed off. Patience Wahine fans! It's a must this season! Nice sweep. Rest up and get ready for tomorrow.

Higgins went to Long all night on poor passes, so she got the garbage that Hartong got all last season. Given that fact I think Long did well. If she can hit about .230 and Manu-Olevao .240-.250 and Nikki Taylor maintains her .287 hitting average of last season, the Wahine will win consistently. For this season, the middles will be the strength of the Wahine in both hitting and blocking, not the outsides.

People need to stop being so hard on this team. Ohio is not a ncaa powerhouse team, but they aren’t some slouch. They return 5 players and two MAC POY. Hawaii is without their best OH in Taylor, of course they will struggle. Hawaii only had 2 returnees on the court. The rest weren’t starters (Magill was at Arizona). Lay off the team. Asu will be tough and the wahine may not win, but they have the skill to do so. Impressed ALOT with Mendoza, kahakai and Adolpho. Mendoza played lights out and kahakai plays like a veteran. Kalei showed leadership and tai has improved leaps. Magill will be good when she gets better with Higgins. Kahakai has AA potential. She might turn our to be the best libero the wahine have ever had.
Great game bows. I’m proud of you

The first match was a mixed bag for Hawai'i. Ohio was picked to repeat as MAC champs so they are not a pushover but they are not as good as ASU so the Wahine will have its work cut out for them tomorrow, especially with Taylor out. I like Higgins' connection with Adolpho, but it took a while for Higgins and Magill to get together. Hawaii's outsides were okay, not spectacular but not bad. Olevao looks to have improved her passing and backrow play so that is encouraging. I expected more out of Passi but I have to temper my expectations as I realize that it is not fair to her to expect her to be the kind of contributor that Aneli Cubi-Otineru was for the Wahine. Long can beat blocks with her quickness but it seems as though it may be difficult for her to be productive facing bigger and better blocking teams. I thought Kahakai was solid. Mendoza also had a good night but I can see Kahakai moving to a starting role as libero with Mendoza moving back to DS. I can see why many were raving about Greeley, she is a solid all-around player. It may be hard to keep her off of the court come mid season.
Overall a good win for the Wahine against a quality Bobcat team.
