People need to stop being so hard on this team. Ohio is not a ncaa powerhouse team, but they aren’t some slouch. They return 5 players and two MAC POY. Hawaii is without their best OH in Taylor, of course they will struggle. Hawaii only had 2 returnees on the court. The rest weren’t starters (Magill was at Arizona). Lay off the team. Asu will be tough and the wahine may not win, but they have the skill to do so. Impressed ALOT with Mendoza, kahakai and Adolpho. Mendoza played lights out and kahakai plays like a veteran. Kalei showed leadership and tai has improved leaps. Magill will be good when she gets better with Higgins. Kahakai has AA potential. She might turn our to be the best libero the wahine have ever had. Great game bows. I’m proud of you Why do feel the need to tell people to lay off the team? A few hours ago you were on the Nebraska/FSU thread and posted this: Hunter should be setting. Mary isn't horrible, but based on everything from last year, and descriptions from this game, hunter is clearly the best setter. Hunter has AA potential whereas Mary is lucky to make b1g HMIn my opinion, no one in this thread posted any worse than you did. In fact there are a lot of support and understanding in this thread with statements such as the following: "Nice win! Not the best match for an opening season but we'll take it. First game jitters and playing with new players... Nice effort by Ginger and Tai. They have improved and hopefully will continue to get better along with everyone else."
"Then again, it is kind of nice seeing Shoji let the LSs play a little. Long is starting to step it up."
"Great start for Higgins!"
"Magill! Woo hoo! Just the fact that they are getting the offensive production from that position is awesome!"
"Kahakai looks so poised and calm on the floor! LOVE IT!"
"Kahakai impressing me with her serves and defense."
"granted our team is young, but i don't think we are deserving of the 17 ranking yet based on the brief performance that I saw. Hitting pct way too low. we will get better with time though"
"That rally shows Hawaii what happens when you lack that power go to hitter. But they are trying."Maybe I skipped over the posts that were being unnecessarily hard on the Bows. If I did, I apologize. I know you're just being supportive of the team, but no poster here deserves to be told to lay off even if you disagree with some of their views. Maybe a few expressed a little frustration but overall they were supportive of the girls.

Agree this was a quality win against a good and well-coached Bobcat team.
Long needs to convert for a higher percentage for this team to be successful. Hopefully a healthy Taylor can remedy this. Honestly don't feel like Passi had a fair chance to prove herself. A lot of her sets tonight were not great. On the ones that were good, you could see she has a cannon of an arm and is somewhat reminiscent of Aneli Cubi-Otineru. Wouldn't count her out yet.
Higgins did OK. Easy to be most critical of the setter. Perhaps fair considering the number of times she made contact with the ball relative to everyone else. Higgins mannerisms very telling from the get go. Obviously nervous. Her footwork and release were poor to start the match. Technically improved as the match progressed, and her decision making was better. Still wish we got to see more from Koelsch. From what limited action we saw, she seemed timid and unwilling to set anything other than the outside. Perhaps why Shoji pulled her in serve receive. I really do wish he would take a page from other coaches and give these girls a chance. Too conservative in that sense if you ask me.

I think Koelsch will be used situationally this season as was true in last night's match. When Shoji needs a bigger block, he will pull Higgins from the front row and use Koelsch. I guess Longo wants to go into coaching as a career, serving as a volunteer assistant this season for the Bows. She sure has the leadership thing down—commanding and vocal as a player.

Exciting to see so many new faces contribute to the win. Returning starters showed leadership. Mendoza who had 172 digs last year as DS as a starter in 5 games playing 30 in 2013, came out strong with 24 digs and what seemed like more then 4 assists. Nice to see Ginger in the front with passion, she was swinging hard and did not give up. Tayler showed she will give us a good year with a variety of skills.
Excited to see this team travel up the rankings.

But is Kolesch playing second fiddle on the bench really a good thing though? She is so talented....as I mentioned earlier, looking at our outsides, Kolesch could have locked up that OPP position if given the chance. Yes, I know the lack of setters was a huge reason she stuck specifically at setter....but it could be a waste of talent if she is riding the pine most of this season. Just being a potential situational blocker is a waste imo.

Nebraska is playing with 6 returnees (granted they lost an all world player). So I think it's fair to be critical on them rather the wahine who start only 2 players from last year

shaky start, for sure, but i liked the fight in this young lineup. impressed most with mendoza, kahakai and olevao.
long, give her credit -- she kept swinging aggressively, even when hawaii got stuck in a rotation leaving her as the only option on out-of-system plays.
higgins started off rough, but seemed to calm down. good serving from her as well.
magill -- you can just see her athleticism. hawaii went to her a lot. which was great! great that the passing held up well enough that hawaii could go to the middle that much. just need to fine tune that connection b/w higgins and magill, and once it does, magill is going to be a tremendous weapon. i mean, magill still led the team in kills, even on mostly shaky connections between her and higgins.
the passing wasn't perfect, but it looked more owing to nerves, rather than a fundamental issue with hawaii's passing line. mendoza is a solid passer (and what a night for her on defense too!). kahakai was a pleasant surprise. she is going to play a lot. i like mendoza and kahakai back there supporting any of the OHs asked to pass alongside them. mendoza and kahakai (when she's in there) will take a lot of pressure off passing duties of the OHs.
olevao looked very poised out there. that she was one of, if not the most, consistent player for hawaii last night says a lot about her development. let's hope she can keep that consistency up.
this lineup plays great defense, but shoji was right in his post-game interview -- they may struggle to generate offense with this lineup. they need taylor. that said, i like the balanced offense. they need to figure out how to sideout in certain rotations, and not to give up points in bunches.
a young lineup, but 2 things that i liked: (1) they managed to stay calm and comeback even when falling behind in the sets, and (2) they played well late in the sets. adolpho, especially, played very well late, getting key kills and blocks.
i just realized i typed a lot. it's really just one match. looking forward to seeing the progression of this team. shaky, but good first start. asu will be tough. win or lose, i just want to see this wahine team step up their game and battle.

Unfortunately it eventually became too crazy, sometimes even crazier than this forum. And last year... last year, that place was a friggin' asylum. I felt bad for Cindy. It was as though she was the doc who often worked during the graveyard shift on many full moon lit nights and discovered the patients had again escaped from their rooms to attack one another. I stopped posting there for fear I would be sucked into the chaos and become pupuli myself. VT vs Volleyshots... For now, I'll take this place... No I'm not kidding you and yes I'm serious. And with Mary, unlike Higgins, Mary is a starter and has been for a long time, this is Higgins first real start. Nebraska is playing with 6 returnees (granted they lost an all world player).
