Random question. What is holding back a team like Australia, Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, Hungary, France and Spain from being top contenders. These are countries that generally produce strong programs in other sports, but why not volleyball?

These are countries that generally produce strong programs in other sports, but why not volleyball? Well some of those European countries you mentioned have good teams, not great because other European teams are much stronger. For ex. Ukraine has a good team, but many of their athletes are being naturalized as Russian eg. Obmochaeva/Goncharova and play as local players in Russian league and even in NT. They also have some talented players as Rykhliuk Olesia, Kozlova Tetyana, Marina Marchenko who don't play for the NT..Spain has a good, but very young teams nowadays and in some time they can be one of the best in Europe IMO. An average European team is in fact stronger than many top teams from America or Asia.. In Europe you have Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia which are all very strong teams.. Serbia for example finished 4th at the ECH last year and they will for sure beat Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico or whatever.. So because of the much stronger competition some countries as you mentioned can't produced world class teams

With regards to Australia, a major obstacle preventing their women's program from being competitive is lack of funding and interest. Other sports like basketball, netball, soccer and swimming are much more visible and are better promoted by the government. Women's volleyball hasn't been a sponsored program at the Australian Institute of Sport for some years now. I remember seeing an interview with Volleyroo player Rebecca Walter before the team left to compete in this years World Grand Prix. She mentioned the players having to pay their own way to tryouts, training, etc. Hard to develop a sport with limited support from its governing body.

I hate to say this, but I fear you may be right. The US will be lucky to make it to the next round. The U.S. is not in the same pool as Brazil, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey. They're in pool C with Russia, Thailand, Mexico, Netherlands, and Kazakhstan. It seems like a relatively easy pool with Russia and U.S.A as the two teams that will most likely advance. italy2014.fivb.org/enThanks. I should have clarified, I mean getting pass round 2 against the likes of Brazil...

I was thinking about the 2015 WGP being held in Omaha next July. It's a good thing the USA is 'hosting' and gets a bid to the 'final round'; It might be the only way they get there.

Ah my mistake. I actually think that may help the US a bit. I think we will match up well with Serbia and Turkey. We can beat all of the team in our opening pool. It would be fascinating if Russia went with Kosheleva and Obmochaeva on the left and Gamova on the right. You mean starting 2 non-passing OPPs and 1 OH with shaky serve receive skills? I hope they go with that line up. Bingo

Bingo But if you consider the attackers in the line-up, as their opponent their shaky serve receive won't pay nearly the dividends it would against other teams. Kosh, Gonch, and Gamova all take huge swings out of system.

Mahlyk looked solid in the WGP too.

Thanks, but that link also says "due to existing TV rights, it is not possible to broadcast this stream." If you can, can you provide thoughts/insights on how the U.S. is doing!? Thanks!!!

Glass-Murphy Hill - Larson Foluke - Harmotto Banwarth
Everyone with a floater.. Larson had 2 aces. Some problems with the reception between her and Hill. They had 3 blocks in a row and had a easy job in the first set.. In the second Dixon in for Akinradewo and Larson was not good in reception and also in attack, she was blocked 3 times in a row and after that she was replaced by Robinson. Now they lost the second set 25-17, and they played pretty bad. Hill making too many service errors. Reception is a big problem and also low balls to the pins. Fawcett was blocked and then hit out straight away, she cant hit those balls..
