That's what we call "close but no cigar" in volleyball terms. Penn State has the banner. The Fightin' Carlinis need to deal with it. Too bad they won't be able to travel to Happy Valley to see it until next season. Begs the question who in their right mind would want to travel to the middle of nowhere PA. PSU poster. Started this month [at least this iteration] and fifty plus posts. Arrogant and dismissive. Sound like some one from the past who was multiple times thrown off the forum? Just block him. It's a great feature.

Most don't expect psu to start tourney with only one loss. It's true u can lose any game on any given night, but if psu is gonna lose it's most likely to happen this week or next. After that their schedule becomes a lot more favorable. It seems like there schedule is front heavy getting their only match against Wisconsin and road matches against Minnesota and Nebraska out of way quickly

After watching Wisconsin at Washington, well I will admit I was not sold on Wisconsin this year because there is a lot of pressure to keep the momentum going from the following year even if you keep most of your starters, so didn't think they would be able to hold that status of one of the greats, I WAS WRONG! Wisconsin looked wonderful. They haven't missed a beat, as if they never had an off season or break. I'm so proud of Wisconsin for getting themselves back in the top 10, I can only guess that is where they will stay this season, PSU and even Nebraska will have something to say about the title in the B1G, but Wisconsin was impressive. What an upgrade on the outside for Wisky, I think her name is Bates??? That girl can crush the ball and is not afraid to call herself a freshman because she swings and plays as if she's going into her JR or SR year. Very impressed with her. Is Wisconsin beatable, of course, Washington handed them their first loss, someone had to take it but WOW, I love Wisconsin's team this season and will be cheering for them when they aren't playing Texas (LOL). As for PSU, they have a ton of talent and are very physical and when they put it all together they can be just as good. I think this match will come down to maturity. Wisconsin has the edge over PSU in that aspect of the game but PSU is playing very well and when you put great competition in across the net from PSU, Rose somehow figures it out. Whoever wins this won, hats off to them. I'm neutral as far as who wins it, 2 freshman outsides on each team that can bang and play with a ton of maturity, I'm excited to watch that and also the overall defense and serve and pass of the game. I did notice one small edge Washington had over Wisconsin that I think Wisconsin just needs to mentally prepare for, Washington put a huge block on Wisky and adjusted well and sort of shut them down in a few sets....when this happened I noticed Wisconsin shut down a little, if PSU does the same then and plays to their potential it will be a brawl for the win. Both teams will be wonderful this season!! Good luck Nice. FYI, we've got an HM AA OH (a lot of abbreviations, I know) coming off meniscus repair soon. She will likely start over the freshman who may DS. Wow, she will take Bates' spot? That's awesome, I'd never heard of the freshman Wisconsin got until the Washington game, and wow she really is impressive. I hope the player coming off her meniscus surgery recovers better than our Tiffany Baker from my team, Texas. I hope Tiffany recovers because she was so good at Tennessee before her injury. Anyways, I'm excited for this match of PSU vs. Wisconsin. I wish luck to both teams, and I hope they both play to their potential because if they do then scores I imagine will be within the 2 they need on each set.

setting the middles of course depends on the quality of your passing and the quality of your middles. A lot of teams set the outsides because that is, most of the time, their only choice. I just watched the Wisconsin - Washington replay last night and noticed what looked like the UW coaching staff pointing out the pattern to McLaughlin....Also, seems like both Washington middles cheated to the Wisconsin outsides, while their left side blocker (Vansant, etc.) stepped in for the slide, essentially cutting off the open court and making it easier for the middle to turn to close...my guess is PSU has been working on this blocking scheme... they absolutely are.. the slide now, is not a surprise for anyone. i hope carlini sets the middles to the middles to keep everyone honest. the badgers didn't adjust against washington.

PSU is just working on blocking period. Right side and right-middle is a problem right now, especially when Nia Grant is not in. I agree with everybody that it's really Bates who's the X factor for Wisconsin. She didn't seem to respond well in the moment to Washington keying in on her. Will she be able to bounce back from that and play in the moment? That will be key. Everyone else is solid.
Side note: I am impressed as hell with Haleigh Nelson and all the progress she has made. Sheff said she's now nearly as much of a video watcher as LC is, which is saying something. It shows big time. She owns the court. And speaking of courts, Courtney Thomas is also knocking my socks off. I know I've said as much before, but it bears repeating.

Let's just not get too caught up in hype here. This match actually means very little in terms of more important matches later in the year. It may mean something for the B10 title but that is a secondary goal for both of these teams.
These teams both are not the teams they will be in December (especially PSU). And Wisky fans should get ready for a surprisingly challenging B1G season. When you make it to the national finals that puts a big target on your back all year. There are going to be 3-5 B1G teams capable of beating anybody on a given night, especially on their home court, and they have Wisconsin and PSU circled on their calendars weeks ahead.
PSU is really an unknown quantity until the freshmen get to play some more against top competition. Wisky is more of a known quantity but here's my suspicion -- they emerged too late last year for the opposing B1G coaches to really spend a lot of time trying to figure out their weaknesses. This year that will not be an issue -- everybody has studied how Carlini runs the offense and there are going to be weaknesses identified.
The B1G season (and this is why B1G and Pac-12 teams are going to win most of the NCAA championships) exposes a team's gaps and then the team and its coaches have to scheme around those weaknesses and get it to work by tournament time. That's why PSU needs to tighten up its defense on the right side or they will see whole freight trains run through there (and maybe it will start Wednesday in Madison).
What Wisconsin had happen to them in Seattle is going to happen to them more this year because they have got the attention of the big time coaches. My one prediction will be that this year will be nothing like last year for Wisconsin. Not that they aren't a great team or won't have another great season. But the B1G will be a different experience for them this year.

It's easy to sneak up on people when they don't know what's comming. It's a whole different beast when u have the target on your back. Everyone's gonna throw everything they have at you. The pressure increases a lot. That being said should be great match. I also don't think u will see best of psu till end if season. I agree that every team will progress I just believe psu has more room to work with then a lot of other teams. Psu is gonna get there points. They have to good of hitters not to. The same can be said about badgers. Both have good floor defense. Service would give edge to psu. Think the games gonna come down to block and who makes less errors. If u wanna look for a weakness in psu right now from past teams it's prob their block. We will see how good Washington can be as season progesses. It seems she's still not at 100%. Badgers get the adv of playing at home. I think most fans look at this game as a tossup. If I look at the strengths of Washington and psu and what the badgers prepare for, I believe Washington has the better block of the two thus far, but believe psu is a much faster team with a better floor defense. The biggest factor is the serving though I believe. Psu has a far better chance at getting badgers out of system then Washington did. Their service game I believe is much stronger.

Saw Washington play quite a bit last weekend. People need to keep their expecations in check. She appears to be a long way from 100% but is at least healthy enough to play and get some exposure to the game. She's not getting to anywhere near her normal elevation, but she does move well, already can pull off a pretty good slide, and I think she will eventually be a good defensive middle. Seems to be very engaged with the team, looks focused when she's on the court, communicates well, enjoying herself out there. Really all the new recruits we've seen have done well. I came away from the weekend more impressed with Lee. Very smooth and quick. Needs work on blocking but some of that is just getting used to the speed of college VB. I agree. Y'all Penn State fans need to stop confusing me when you write things like "Saw Washington play quite a bit last weekend."

When she's 100% she could make an interesting matchup with Haleigh Nelson. But I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't play much. They're easing her in.
