Amidst all the 2014 NPOY candidates that always get mentioned (Carlini, Inky, Hancock, Vansant, etc.) I always feel like Lowe is on the -low- end of the totem pole. I know a big part of the award is contingent on how far you make it in the tourney, but really, she's elevated her game to another level this season. The kills I was expecting, but her dedication to improving in the back-row should be commended just as much allowing her to be left out there for 6-rotations and not be a viability. She's quietly turning into a complete-package player and a legit candidate for NPOY this early-on. The thing is, AVCA NPOY almost always goes to a player whose team is in the Final Four. So any serious prediction of NPOY is also a discussion about which teams can be expected to advance in the tournament. My opinion of UCLA has been steadily rising, but I'm not sure they are good enough to have a real shot. I don't believe UCLA is Final Four good just yet I think those questions will be answered when the play Stanford and Washington. Lowe is hitting .378 on the season just under 2 digs per set at 1.91 so she is on par for NPOY in comparison Vansant is hitting .379 and 2.74 digs per set. I think the award will go to whomever makes it to the Final Four it would be hard to argue any players outside of those already mentioned along with Inky, Carlini and Hancock if their respective teams should make it.

Setting Lowe helps quite a bit. She's also improved quickly even from her first starts at UCLA, so that seems to be just taking lessons from the coaching staff quickly. I had never seen Consani before last night, and also thought she did a great job of putting the ball right where Lowe wanted it. I thought her connection with the middles was not as good, but overall, she did a very good job. UCLA has to be thrilled that she is there. After 4 weeks, Consani is second in the NCAA in assists/game. Assists Per Set 1 Paige Brown, Appalachian St. 12.52 2 Julie Consani, UCLA 12.18 3 Lauren Carlini, Wisconsin 11.97 4 Kirsten Mead, Santa Clara 11.93 5 Madi Bugg, Stanford 11.81

What I like about Lowe besides her playing ability is that she's having a great time on the court and doesn't get flustered. Even if she gets roofed her next swing she puts the ball down. Well, that's good for Lowe. Last season I could see her getting really frustrated when UCLA was in their own slump. Lowe was trying her hardest, maybe too hard but that particular team could not gel.

She only got blocked a couple times if I recall correctly, the first was a set too far off the net and second was a trap set. If Karch doesn't quadruple down on his control issues Lowe will be the back up opposite to Hooker in Rio.
