I think the last update was that she is in the film school as a regular student. Still, Hughes and Claes would probably be setter upgrades and I'm sure they could find a DS or two (Bria Russ?) on that sand team.
I wasn't paying a ton of attention last night but they weren't terminating even on good passes, so there's definitely problems up and down the chain for them.

The 2015 setter coming in is much improved over the two currently on roster. She is tall, 6"1', physical and puts up a nice ball. Although, it doesn't solve the ball control problem.

Who is the new setter that they recruited. 'SC also recruited E. Young to set and play OH. They underutilized her throughout her 4 years at 'SC. She's finally sub-ing and out this season, but it would have been a no brainer to train her as the #2 setter behind Kendall Bateman. While Crone has started last 2 seasons, she's not very consistent or spread the 'SC offense. Everything is so predictable with the USC offense. They need a quicker tempo...

I thought Hughes was planning on playing both indoor and sand? Or had she always wanted to play sand in college?

I thought Hughes was planning on playing both indoor and sand? Or had she always wanted to play sand in college? I am pretty sure that Mick does not allow his girls to play sand… So it is either indoor or sand at USC.

I thought Hughes was planning on playing both indoor and sand? Or had she always wanted to play sand in college? Yeah, I'm sure Mick had a hand in recruiting her. When USC decided to not allow players to crossover, she probably stuck to sand where she excels.

The Great USC Volleyball Schism occurred after the end of the 2012 sand season. From that point forward every SC recruit has been indoor only or sand only.

At Washington they organizationally put Sand and Indoor together, making McLaughlin head of the volleyball program (as well as head coach for Indoor), with Cook as head coach of Sand.

It doesn't matter how many terminators a team has if the pass and set are consistently below par. There may not be a solution to these glaring problems this year with the players available but it's probably time to take some risks before the season is a total loss. It's ironic that there are better setters (and probably better defensive players) on the sand team.

And I don't think it can be overstated how much USC depended on Hagglund for backrow defense last year.
Hagglund: 5.33 digs/set; Whittingham: 3.90 digs/set. Shaw: 2.83 digs/set; Gillis: 2.34 digs/set.

Unlike many schools, it seems that there is zero overlap between USC's indoor program and their sand program. They had a separate sand coach from day one, while many schools had the indoor coach do sand for at least the first year. It seems like Haley has nothing to do with the sand program and maybe discourages his players from participating there. I remember watching USC sand team in 2013, and seeing Fuller and Sary playing, with a couple other indoor "castoffs" in Ettinger and Russ. Last seasons team had no one playing indoor simultaneously.
I remember feeling confused as to why M.H. favored Crone over Sary when they played indoor together. Didn't make sense to me.

Shame, they could really use some of those sand players right now.... Claes, Hughes, Strange, Burnham....
