Who are the two announcers? I thought the lady sounded like Beth Mowins, but did I hear another name for her? Shar? Char? And the man is an "Al" who coached at UCLA. Obviously not Al Scates. :) who? update...My bad! I have never heard the voice of Al Scates before, and didn't know he was traveling and doing TV vb color. Figured he had just totally retired. Haven't seen the camera on the announcers. I understand announcers are not at UW. In a TV studio someplace. At sign off after match done, woman said her name was Cristal? Chris? Didn't catch the last name. No one traveled. The announcers were not in Hec Ed. They must have been calling the game off the feed.

I think this shows how STRONG the graduating class was last year. Usc, psu, msu, Michigan, Minnesota, hawaii, nebraksa, all lost TOP talent. So many difference maker players came from that class.

Al Scates kept commenting on USC being young... UW is also young. UW has upperclassmen in key positions, I wouldn't call UW "young"....I also wouldn't call USC "young", or, at least, not out of necessity. UW is starting three freshmen (Tanner, Scambray, and Jones) and playing a fourth (Schwan). They are starting six seniors and juniors, however. USC is starting two freshmen (Gillis and Dunn) and playing a third (Abercrombie, who was injured tonight). A fourth was a serving sub (Wheatley). USC does have six sophomores on their roster (UW has none). Tonight USC started four seniors and juniors. They were shorthanded tonight with two out with injuries (Ruddins and Abercrombie).

USC no longer deserves to be ranked. Starting 0-3 in conference is not going to cut it granted all the teams they have lost to are ranked. They aren't good enough.

They won't drop from losing to a team ranked 15 spots above them. They'd better beat the Cougs, however, or it will be the funhouse slide for them. When was the last time that the Trojans were unranked? Ever?

Random thought: Jennifer Lawrence would be the perfect choice to play Lianna Sybeldon in Washington Volleyball the Movie. She can also play Karsta Lowe while she's at it.

UW played a close-to-perfect three sets against USC.
But it's still hard to gauge how good the Huskies are. Are they as good as they looked last night, or is USC really just not playing well...or a combination of both. Al Scates pointed out that Nwanebu is just not jumping as high as she was last year (expected, after a broken back, of course). Once she is fully back to speed, USC will be a better team.
The UW match against UCLA may be a much better indicator of where the Huskies really stand. UCLA won't be easy, even at Hec Ed. They have the potential to be UW's first loss.
On another note, this scheduling situation is really annoying. Washington has to play Wednesday night and then turn around and have another tough match Friday night against UCLA. But UCLA is off all week and their first match of the week is Friday night, being more well-rested when they take on Washington.
And these 11 a.m. Sunday matches strike me as a guarantee of poor attendance. Next week Washington plays at Oregon...that should be a blockbuster match. But it's 11 a.m. on Sunday?!?!!
Why not just stick with Weds night/Fri night matches consistently. Having some teams play Weds/Fri and some Fri/Sun seems not only bad for fans, but somewhat unfair for competition.
I'm finished now.

^ You're right, Tom. That's usually Oregon's best-attended home match of the season and they stuck it at 11 AM on a Sunday? Attendance is mostly students, and how many are going to get up that early?
In lieu of their normal promos, Athletics Dept. should give away FREE BACON. That'll guarantee a healthy-sized (if unhealthily sized) student section.

That's the price of the TV coverage, in all sports.
I hate sitting there live while the refs hold up the action waiting for the signal from the TV folks that they can start playing. I hate these weeknight matches and the weekend morning matches. I really don't like it when one team has eight days to prepare for a match and the other team has a day.
But I do like being able to watch so many matches live on TV!
From a fairness position, a live audience position, a tournament preparation position, and a minimal impact on student athletes position, I like the old Fri/Sat schedule. But I don't think it's coming back.

Based on post game comments of JMac, Sybeldon, and Vansant, it is clear that the Huskies prepared well for this match, watching lots of film, and knowing USC's tendencies. Their mental focus was outstanding, easily the best of the season. When you see a team like USC with great talent (although with some key injuries or players coming back from injury) not playing up to their potential, you tend to appreciate the UW coaching staff. If they keep developing this team chemistry, the rest of he season should be a lot of fun.

Excellent performance by Jones the last two matches.
USC: 7 kills, 0 errors, 10 attacks, .700, 4 blocks Cal: 6 kills, 0 errors, 11 attacks, .545, 4 blocks
Total: 13 kills, 0 errors, 21 attacks, .619, 8 blocks
On the front row with Vansant for two rotations, forces opposing defenses to pick their poison. Her improved numbers are also an indication of much improved back setting by Tanner, who last night for the first time, I believe, had more assists than Beals (20 to 18).
