Wow, I had no idea. What are they into?
JMHO
Your typical Stanford student and Palo Alto resident have more important things to do on a friday night than watch a volleyball match...It's not a top rated schools and one of the most highly desirable area to live in for nothing. I also think that the significant asian population hurts attendance....American asians aren't typically into volleyball.
Stanford is a very unique school that has a very limited fan base for most sports here on the Farm. It's not like Nebraska where there are a lot of older fans that goes to the matches for years and years to come. The location of the school has a lot of different areas where a lot of students can go to. Maybe winning a championship in volleyball can reignite the volleyball fans like what the football team has done for the past 3 seasons. Maybe Stanford doesn't publicly draw a lot of students by not advertising the game matches and there's no red zone at Maples Pavilion for volleyball like there is in basketball. JMHO Your typical Stanford student and Palo Alto resident have more important things to do on a friday night than watch a volleyball match...It's not a top rated schools and one of the most highly desirable area to live in for nothing. I also think that the significant asian population hurts attendance....American asians aren't typically into volleyball. Stanford is only 35 minutes to 1 hour away depending from San Francisco where a lot of students and Palo Alto residents love to go on the weekend. Stanford's academic quarter system is extremely hard as well. Fitting all of your classes instead of a 16 week semester system into 8 week quarter system. They have to learn how to balance work and school as well. The Asian population is about equal to the white population at the Stanford campus as well as in Palo Alto. Football has now been the #1 sport on campus due to 3 consecutive BCS Bowl games. I'm hoping that volleyball can be in the top tier of sports on campus.

Anyways, I didn't expect Oregon to win but it does smart that we left a lot of points on the board with mental errors in Set 1 (which we really had control of) and that we didn't pass well overall. Now to focus on Cal, who always plays us tough.
I was really impressed with Lutz on offense, and Stanford's team defense was quite good as well. However, the biggest difference was their ability to stay controlled throughout the match and not give away free points (apart from a couple straight-up passing errors)

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just what I observe.

Man, who were all those guys with Asian names I played vball with in Santa Clara and visited with at the Stanford matches. Thank God there aren't more fans at the matches. Makes it a ton easier to find a GA seat!

I think if you were to really look at attendance at these bay area schools and go to some of the more competitive volleyball spots around the bay area, Asians are significantly underrepresented.

If you would have told me that Serena Warner would be doing the best for Oregon I would have said unlikely she is hitting unbelievably. If someone told me that Martenne and the middles were the offensive weapons for oregon.... Liz brenner did not look good at all though. I know everyone says she's a better player now but I'm not sure about that. The other sports might have affected her volleyball development Stanford stacked up on Brenner tonight, and Gilbert sat on her angle to take her cross-court hit away. Also, as Holly I think said, She isn't jumping as well this year. The good news for Oregon is that when they pass well and run that electric, fast offense, hitters like Bettendorf and Warner really came into their own. Oregon is serving tough, their frosh setter looks very good, they're blocking much better this year, and their passing and defense are nails. They just don't have the experience or weapons that Stanford has. BTW, is it true that Dunning said that Lutz may be the best player he ever coached? She sure looked that way tonight, routinely hitting with power over the block, 13 kills and zero errors, .591. She also has great hands.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just what I observe. I've never paid attention to the demographics of the crowd in my hundreds of matches attended there. However, with all of my years working in the volleyball community in the bay area, I would not say it was an underrepresented demographic.

I though stanford played really tough and Oregon was pretty great :-) I'm glad the sets to the outside were higher and burgess did her thing :-) she continues this she is all America and Stanford is natty champs... Merete is an offensive stud :-) such a fun team :-) it's rare to have the no.1 and 2 highest hitting percent players on one team :-)

Most girls her height seem to lack the mechanics and strengths to be a strong offensive weapon and she has both. Burgess certainly had her best night offensively this year and hopefully that will continue.
