I saw Stanford when they were at the USD tournament, they were very impressive back then. Now, they seem to have a little bit of swagger now since Burgess and Howard are starting to heat up. Hopefully that will lead to a championship for the seniors on the team.

Meanwhile in Berkeley, Oregon St. sweeps pretty easily. How did that happen?

Stanford's serve receive started out atrocious. Stanford was never in a rhythm for long with their passing. Some credit definitely goes to Moore and Oregon's serving. Some criticism has to go to experienced Stanford players for their inconsistency. I would like to watch one game where everyone on the team plays at a high level for the entire match.
I heard Holly say Dunning thinks Lutz might become the best player he has ever coached. I think it is a little premature for that but I understand when a coach gets excited about a player's potential.
Oregon is capable of beating any team in the Pac-12. They have a good middle attack. If their passing can hold up throughout a match they will be tough to beat.

That was a relatively good crowd tonight. 3000+ is better than the attendance 2 years ago when Oregon came in at #2. Not sure what it sounded like on TV, but it was plenty loud in person. Just have to keep in mind that only Set 1 was close, and that was only because Stanford had some serious shanks (4 REs in the first 21 pts of that set). Tough night for Brenner, who absolutely torched Stanford 3 years ago with 31-3-43 hitting stats. She was 7-7-30 tonight and didn't pass very well either. Oregon played very well in stretches but their passing and defense was just not consistent enough.

The contrast in the crowd support in this match compared to what PSU/Nebraska were treated to is night and day. Two undefeated conference foes and that's all they can draw?? It's embarrassing. Thanks for your input. I don't think it is embarrassing at all. Stanford's student body has interests other than watching people bang a ball over a net. Different priorities than at Nebraska. Nebraska is an excellent university with a first-rate volleyball program. It might be better to praise your school than to spend time trying to put down other schools.

Strange match as the team on Stanford's home side seem to have a lot of trouble passing the ball. Stanford was lucky to pull out set one considering they were on the bad side. It was very warm in Palo Alto today and at game time (7pm) I think it was still roughly 80 degrees outside. My best guess is the HVAC system caused a slight head wind for teams on the good side which of course caused their float serves to dance around more.

You would be way off base about volleyball in the Bay Area. eh, I don't think so...I've been to plenty of matches in the bay area, and now currently live and play here....Asians make up a 1/3 of the population around Palo Alto....go to a Stanford match and you tell me if you see anywhere close to 1/3 of the crowd being Asian. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just what I observe. I disagree about the demographics of people that play volleyball in the bay area. Having lived here for 15 years, and having played competitive volleyball in pretty much every venue in the area, I feel pretty comfortable in saying that at least 1/3 (if not more) of the volleyball population in the bay area is Asian. I do not disagree about the demographics at the Stanford matches though when referring to spectators.

Yes, Gilbert had some uncharacteristic shanks, especially in the first set. For all the criticism of Howard, she really kept Stanford in that first set and scored some critical kills, before the rest of the offense got going. It is interesting to watch Lutz's progress.
I wasn't too surprised that Oregon slumped in the second set, after letting a very exciting first set slip away. But then the same thing happened in the fourth set, after a decisive win in the third. Weird; what happened to their momentum? Maybe it was more about Stanford recovering from whatever ailed them at the beginning of the third.

[quote author=" blastingsand" Liz brenner did not look good at all though. I know everyone says she's a better player now but I'm not sure about that. The other sports might have affected her volleyball development [/quote] Her sets were way too low...

Doubt seriously Dunning said Lutz is the best player he ever coached. Logan Tom was on his team for a year or two.
Attended the match tonight and would make the following points:
Oregon dominated serve/receive in set one, yet Stanford still one, with some good late serves. Burgess got some mileage out of really short serves, but once Nady simply overhand passed it, then stepped up and demolished the ball. Don't know why more teams don't pass short serves the same way.
Warner and Nady were very strong in the middle for Oregon, especially on offense.
When the passing got stressed it looked like trap sets started coming; Set 2 turned on a run where Luz merely had to reach over the net as the sets were too close.
Burgess did have a good night on offense, and defense too. Howard started off strong, then sort of faded away with some illegal backrow attacks.
Those who say Brenner hits too low may be right. She wil not succeed hitting seam into a block, as she was doing tonight.
Bettendorf has improved enormously. If Shebby does the same Oregon will be lively the next few years.

In the short time she has taken over the MB2 position, she has improved with each match, hitting with increasing power and timing, blocking better, and setting like a dream. Keep in mind that Lutz didn't play high school ball! She played some club, but is about as close to loaded with potential as a player could be. Hard to teach someone to be 6'8"! I believed that losing Wopat would dog Stanford all season, but if Lutz keeps cranking it up, I may pleasantly be proven wrong.

Those are all season ticket holders, and a large chunk of them weren't there.

Madi Buggs decision to set Burgess backrow is why she is one of the best setters in the country. She saw the block and Burgess got a kill. Then back to the middle to Ajanaku. Scores tied 22 up. Have to agree. That was a nice set. Madi is making MUCH better decisions this year than in the past two years. She has improved a lot.

Stanford takes the first set 25-23. I love Burgess she dug a rocket that kept the play alive which led to a Stanford block for the win in set one. Burgess played tremendous defense tonight, and her swing is getting back into form as well. Bodes well
