Burnsville, MN is not a suburb of Bloomington. Both are suburbs of Minneapolis. So, it is a suburb of a suburb... Hooper is closer to 50 miles from Omaha, so I grant that. The point of my post was to counter the impression that these are mostly "small-town" girls. All except two of the "towns" are at least in the orbit of a large city. The bigger the city (Chicago, for instance), the more far-flung its suburbs (Google Maps distances are city-center to city-center).

Burnsville and Bloomington are BOTH suburbs. They are equivalent.
Zanesville is not a suburb at all.
I only chime in as a Minnesotan and Ohio native. I have no dog in this fight.

Burnsville is a suburb of Minneapolis. Anyway, I agree with your point that although some of these players are from the Midwest, it doesn't mean they are neccessarily from small towns. But anyway, who cares really.

I see this as just Coach Cook throwing something out there for the local media. Who knows if he was referring to Lincoln or the girls' home towns anyway? Never would resonate outside the state of Nebraska.
If he thought this quote would end up meaning anything outside Nebraska, he would have said things he's said in the past. About not liking the substitution rules, about trying to train players to play all the way around and to be able to pass. How these rules are not conducive to developing international talent. Then talk about those three former Husker players work ethic, discipline and attention to detail and mention how hard Robinson worked and bought in last year, begging the follow up question about whether or not Nebraska put Robinson on the path to the national team. Then defer that question to her. Chances are, Lincoln and Omaha papers get that quote and write a story. That article or portions of it, end up being in recruiting letters for the next ten years.
So, if anything, opportunity missed.
Disclaimer: I know nothing about what really goes on in recruiting, so I could be way off base there.

The Chinese libero had Nicole Davis syndrome Yup, the current generation of Chinese players never properly learned to received and pass. So it doesn't surprise me. Yeah, but Zhu Ting's improved quite a bit in terms of receiving and passing compared to her previous year. Also, according to some of the news articles I read, Zhu started cramping after set 2 in the final so she didn't play the 3rd set. She's also completely exhausted after the match with DR but luckily there was a day of rest for her to recover before the semis. Another funny thing is that the Chinese team didn't eat any meat during the whole tournament due to fear of illegal growth hormones.

That's funny, considering what you might actually find in food in China. You shouldn't believe everything you read. China did well considering their struggles in the past year, and they have good young players and are positioned well at this point in the quad.

They use the highest quality food for their NT when they are in China. They also weren't used to Italian food, so some of the Chinese reporters travelling with their team cooked for them. Also, according Lang Ping herself, Zhu was malnourished in the last few years so she ordered protein powder from the US just for her.

Just got back to the US after an incredible time in Milan. If anyone has a chance to experience volleyball like this in person, do not miss the opportunity. Traveling around the week before the finals also gave me a big appreciation of what the players have to go through being on the road in different hotels for weeks as part of this tournament. Grueling.
