He's a great international/elite level coach, if you read the threads. College coach if you look at some of the fundamentals of coaching (recruiting and game management) at the college level he is not. He's not a great coach period. There are different factors that determine how successful you are at an international or collegiate level. Hugh is better suited to an international job because it is less personality dependent (that is, less dependent on recruiting), and more management/organizational dependent (in other words, you have your pick of the best talent that is available for a national team roster). Generally, coaches are either oriented towards a system, a technical or a tactical approach. A system oriented coach usually favors a set tempo, whether it be a fast tempo (which requires a high level of technical ability), or some other consistent or set tempo (such as a high ball or mid-tempo, slightly off the net, which hugh favors). In Hugh's case, he doesn't make in match adjustments because he believes that if the players execute properly, they will be able to maximize the advantages of his system. The problem is that he isn't necessarily a good training coach who can develop his team to execute properly.

Minnesota's immense struggles really just come down to the fact that they really have no game changing pin hitters. With no effective options on the pins, and the fact that we can't just feed the middles on every ball, it makes it hard to be a good attacking team.
What I'd like to see Hugh try (he hasn't done this once this season, who knows why) is put Goehner on the OH for 1 whole match. Just one match in full. See how she does, and see if she would be an improvement for the rest of the season.

Thank you Volleyguy for stating this perfectly. It may come across as Hugh-hating, but it's reality.

Well said Ruffda, however, Hugh has said he has a deep bench. This is something he has said numerous times. He chose to put in Goehner for Nora (I think this is the right sub); however, run some offense in the backrow with her. The Gopher backrow offense is non-existant now. There are other options on the bench for him...are they deep? Maybe not, but give them a try, better than getting blocked over and over. Tipping 4 points in a row. Setting the ball on top of the tape over and over. These are coaching decisions to not make a change even if for a point to break momentum. If he said that -- and I don't remember it -- his actions speak volumes. I think he's playing the players he thinks he needs to in order to win. Handley can't play defense like Schau. Paige can't, right now, terminate at opposite. If he saves Goehner as an OH sub, he's wasting her talent. This team would truly benefit from another option at OH. But, right now, at least, they don't have it. Furthermore, they absolutely NEED Wilhite to find some confidence and be aggressive out there. Pulling her, especially when they don't have anyone to replace her, is counter-productive. These are all my opinions, of course. I saw some promising things tonight. I also saw some of the same things that have been killing them all season long. I sure hope they show us more of the former and find a way to overcome the latter.

Game management is making subs. Even if for just a point or two. He has more options on the bench, but he won't try them. He has left some of the same players in over and over, sometimes all it takes is taking a player out, talking and them putting them back in. Game management is making adjustments to the block mid-match. Making changes to back court defense, mid-match. Making changes to your offensive strategy mid-match. The middle was VERY effective tonight, take your setter and instruct her to get the ball to the middle whenever possible. Game management is realizing your setter is not setting the right side effectively (too tight, bad choices on when to set RS). Game management is working your players (young and not elite) through the match. Totally disagree, fwiw, that he has options on the bench. "Get the ball to the middle." Right. They were doing that every time they could. They aren't stupid. They know the slide was working. Two things prevent that: 1) the passing broke down a little and 2) Nebraska served area 2 and 3 consistently, clogging up that option. You know what hurt them as much as anything? Their serving. Nebraska, like most teams, is pretty ordinary when out-of-system. They stopped getting them out-of-system. This is on the players. They get tight, they back off on their serves. They make errors. Easy to say "coach that away," but very hard to do. Hugh knows what is wrong. The players know what is wrong. They need to push through and win the games and matches that are there to be won, rather than playing scared. Also easier said than done.

In regards to this match at least, I think Wilhite was very terminal when she received a set inside and slightly off the net. But going with the hot hand doesn't seem to be in the play book for this team.

Yes he has said it early on in the season both quotes and videos. Goehner is a wasted sub if the OH isn't producing, but put her in back row for Wilhite who is struggling right now and if Wilhite struggles front row Goehner can stay front row. Goehner is passing quite well right now and it seems Wilhite is struggling with the 6 rotations, let her concentrate on front row. There were some promising things, but some of the same of what we have seen all year which leads to coaching. While not having great options in all 6 rotations, you have players who can play 3 for them. We assume that what we see in the match is what is happening in practice, some players thrive on game situations, give em a chance when you have hitters and setters who are clearly stuggling for several matches in a row. Someone said Handley is not effective deffensively, run a modified 6-2. There are options, we just need to see them, or at least glimpses of them.

FWIW they did not get the ball to the middle. They ran the slide when possible, there are other sets to the middle than the slide and when they ran them they were pretty effective tonight. There were many options available to set the middle tonight that Schau chose not to set the middle. This isn't something relative to just tonight, but other matches as well. YES, passing stuggles, but there are still options (at times) to set the middle, but it's not set or set poorly. FWIW, I am not sure that Hugh knows how to fix whats wrong.

Yes, but this means you have a player worse than Goehner or Wilhite playing in the backrow for Nora. You've taken two of your better players, on a team without depth, and turned them into one player AND you've made yourself weaker in the backrow when Nora comes out. What they need is another outside hitter. They don't have one.

Not what I saw. She was getting stuffed on inside sets. I said inside and off the net. She got stuffed when the set was too close to the net, but with room, she hits over the block. And the reason it needs to be inside is that Wilhite has a bit of a roundhouse swing, which means she doesn't hit a true line shot, and needs the extra space.

I know what you said and meant and I stand by my response. She got stuffed. Then she started tipping. Then she got stuffed some more. Nebraska also dug her. This is a problem.

An average option for Nora then is Bohl. She has experience, but then do you gain more on the OH with that switch? Worth a try? I go back to my other complaint, recruiting. Who has Hugh brought in? You can't count the ones that came here after the fact (Goehner, Wilhite). Who have we lost because of the recruiting choices? Food for thought...

Again, she is/was capable of hitting over the Nebraska block, so the point is, set to the hitter's preference, not the system.
