I think Shoji was too quick with the trigger on "demoting" Mendoza. I watched the Hawaii-UC Irvine match and aside from a couple of missed digs of hard shots and missed tip shots, Mendoza wasn't playing horribly. In fact, when Kahakai was put in, she missed the same types of shots that Mendoza missed. Kahakai wasn't an upgrade. She wasn't performing better than Mendoza at all. In the first two sets, Hawaii just couldn't terminate the ball even when Mendoza was digging and passing well. Not only did Hawaii fail to terminate, but Higgins kept setting the ball to players who had blockers up. Shoji was faulting Mendoza when she wasn't the one playing horribly.

Also, I reiterate what I said about the most popular player on the team being the second string QB. Shoji experimented with the 6-2 in the third set and Koelsch didn't set a good game. With extended playing time, we saw why Koelsch is a backup and not the starter. Some really horrendous sets. Near the last half of that third set, Shoji pulled the plug on the 6-2 and put in Higgins for good to stabilize the offense. I'm still hopeful of Koelsch but we should all now understand why she's not ready to start.
