Traffic, weather, parking. Not an issue in Arizona, but attendance still stunk. Unless is the AZ schools playing each other, volleyball is not a big draw here. If you look at the NCAA attendance stats, the best attendance is generally at cold-weather (in winter) schools. From 2012 attendance, only three of the top 15 are warm-weather schools: Hawaii, Florida, and Texas.

But it seems to me there's a real problem with Pac-12 Volleyball and attendance. This is a great sport, the conference is having a remarkable year. It's a great product that is very family friendly and, now, has more exposure than ever before. So why does attendance for Pac-12 volleyball absolutely, positively, stink to high heavan. Why fight traffic, parking, gang activity, when you can watch the matches on the Pac-12 network? The numbers are really high right now. Within 5 years Southern Cal and UCLA will avg 200-300 people per match. "gang activity" lol, surely you are joking???

A USC football player a number of years ago caught a stray bullet in the arm, on the practice field.

I do have to think that a recruit has got to be affected by some of the climates that they are experiencing on their trips to "event-like" atmospheres in many B1G schools and Texas.

VB fans go to the USC football field? I am sorry, but every time I here people characterize something with an anecdotal story, or create a generalized 'fear', there is usually little to back it up. parking at the Galen center and going to a volleyball match is not going to expose oneself to any likely 'gang' activity (whatever 'gang' activity means), unless one wants to drive a couple of blocks and get out and walk up and down streets sampling liquor stores. it's like so many people I've known that have a 'perception' that all LB is a bastion of 'gang activity'

It's not the first time bigfan has expressed his so-cal big city gang paranoia. Both of you guys have been watching too many reruns of "Grand Canyon". Of course, gang activity still exists, but our society is incredibly effective at segregating and marginalizing all kinds of influences, and it is extremely rare for anyone nowadays to be directly affected by "gang activity" unless they specifically know someone in a gang, or are in prison.

Anyone who has been to Galen knows that it's in the middle of a very busy part of the USC campus, with parking structures fifty yards away. Nobody is looking over their shoulder for imaginary Crips. C'mon, folks.

Stanford has been averaging 2,214/game for its 11 home games so far this season, but 3 of the last 4 have each been over 3,000 (against Oregon, UCLA and USC). At SU, attendance seems to be pretty well correlated with the quality of the opponent; being undefeated so far also helps. Tuesday: 1,866 (1 game) Fri: 2,625 (5 games) Sat: 1,631 (3 games: SCU, Penn and Wash. St.) Sun: 2,230 (2 games)

ASU has a different crowd than say Nebraska-not as much gray hair as they have in Lincoln. ASU fans are mostly young girls and parents and friends and families of local players and always a student section that is sporadic. Last night the attendance was horrible but what young girl wants to watch volleyball on the one night of the year-a Friday night to boot, when they can pretend to be someone they are not. Last night is not a good night to look at average attendance. ASU broke their single game attendance record this year, just a few weeks ago against Washington-4185. Not too shabby!

I'm sure the Big Ten had better attendance, but I'd be surprised if any other conference averaged any better last night. The Missouri Valley Conference had 5 matches last night that totaled 4115 spectators (2638 @ UNI, 1477 total in the other 4 matches). that's an average of 823 per match vs. 842 per match in the Pac 12 ACC Numbers: Miami at North Carolina 845 Wake at Duke 1,118 Pitt at Virginia Tech 501 Florida State at NC State 331 Georgia Tech at Notre Dame 689 Syracuse at Louisville 1,804 Virginia at Clemson 319 Average 801 Total 5,607

It was quite a while back (late-80s or so) - read a report about it in the newspaper at the time. Definitely helped UW's football recruiting in those days. That said, I suspect "fear of traffic" is probably a bigger factor than "fear of gangs."

If the Pac12 wanted to improve their volleyball average attendance, they could always invite Hawaii in. But then there's football.....
