Huskers made too many errors in the 5th to win. Illini outsides played well. Impressive for Criswell to come in and dominate the 5th.

good lord 11-7 I credit the 3 votes that took Ill in 5 One of those was mine! Funny thing was, I didn't think they could win in 4 as in Lincoln w/out Criswell healthy. Turns out they needed her to pull this out.

Why did Ostrander play at all?? Fien has been the hype all week, and she was doing her job just fine! Okay, she missed some blocks, but was Ostrander really necessary? I thought it sent a bad message, because teams are showing respect and prepare for Fien. Ostrander is cold at this point of the season, and Fien is hot. Fien is formidable to any floor defense in the nation. She's taking smart shots, she opens up the offense, and she's got a bomb for an arm.
Kadie was clutch. You can't ask for much more. She was making important kills all night. She is really coming around as a go-to OH. Amber is solid. Only hit .129 tonight, but she is getting more kills, it seems.

Until your team establishes a middle presence, good luck moving forward in the tournament. 15% of the sets going to the middle is not going to beat teams moving forward. The OH1 for NE tonight had 30% of the attempts. Too one-dimensional.

Pretty amazing 5 set victory for Illinois. This was pretty much a slugfest with a lot of questionable linesmen calls (the up official overruled the linesmen at least twice maybe more). As a frequent game attendee at Huff, I never have had a lot of confidence in the two linespeople that were calling lines at this match. I would not accuse either of these two of calling lines biased in favor of Illinois. They just seem to make too many bad line calls (one is really too many), but they are equal opportunity bad calls. The up official last night seemed to realize this early on, and was not afraid to overrule. I have come to really admire these linespeople for being willing to do this job. I would not want to do it, but yet I feel free to holler at a linesperson who I feel has just done my team an injustice by a bad line call. Again, none of these "bad calls" are done intentionally to favor one team or another...they are just questionable calls. HATS OFF TO ANYONE WHO IS WILLING TO CALL LINES IN A B1G MATCH!
The officiating at the match (particularly with the linespersons) really seemed to agitate Coach Cook and his players. I had some sympathy for their feelings, unfortunately Coach Cook's reputation for complaining about calls precedes him, and seems to me to always undermine his complaints (even when they are justified). I had much less sympathy for the constant complaining and bad sportsmanship of the Husker players. They were constantly questioning calls, giving both the officials the 'stinkeye' and even yelling at the down official. Very poor...but the Husker players seem to be just emulating their coach.
From an Illini standpoint, this was an amazing, "it takes a village" win over a very talented Husker team. The Illinois setter, Viliunas, apparently had the flu, and had to go to the lockerroom before the end of the second set. She did return to play in sets 3-5, but in a modified 6-2 with both the other Illinois setters, Palmer and Kelsay getting time at setting. It was a valiant effort by Viliunas in obvious discomfort, willing her body to not let her team down. If this impediment to Illini success was not enough, Jocelyn Birks began to experience pain in her left knee that forced her to exit the match towards the end of the 4th set. I thought there was no way Illinois could capture the 5th set with Viliunas' playing sick and playing without their All Big Ten, All American OH Birks. Enter Morganne Criswell who was so good against Nebraska at Nebraska for Birks. However, Criswell is dealing with her own knee injury that has bothered her for several matches. In fact, soph Michelle Strizak has been playing well in Criswell's place the last couple of matches. Criswell started slowly, but had four kills in six attacks in the crucial 5th set to help spur the Illini on to a clinching 15-10 5th set win, and match win.
Congrats to Coach Hambly and his staff for cobbling together various groups of Illini during the match to bring home the victory. Hambly used 14 players to win this crucial match, and every one of them was essential. Ali Stark played every position during the match except middle blocker. Way to go TEAM ILLINOIS and COACHES!

Nebraska hasn't been able to set the middle for two years and it's become a major problem. A combo of a marginal setter and some really unskilled attackers in the middle. Cici Hall will put a ball away 2 in 10 swings. Haggerty might be the worst slide hitter in the country, though that was her bread and butter as a freshman (with Lauren Cook setting her). The middles have been an offensive weakness all season, but last night was as bad as it's ever been.

Mary is not comfortable running a middle attack. Don't know why, she just isn't, won't, hasn't.
